Shakespeare's Restless World: Portrait of an Era

ePub Shakespeare's Restless World: Portrait of an Era by Neil MacGregor in Arts-Photography

Description

A major new biography of Duke Ellington from the acclaimed author of Pops: A Life of Louis Armstrong Edward Kennedy ldquo;Dukerdquo; Ellington was the greatest jazz composer of the twentieth centurymdash;and an impenetrably enigmatic personality whom no one; not even his closest friends; claimed to understand. The grandson of a slave; he dropped out of high school to become one of the worldrsquo;s most famous musicians; a showman of incomparable suavity who was as comfortable in Carnegie Hall as in the nightclubs where he honed his style. He wrote some fifteen hundred compositions; many of which; like ldquo;Mood Indigordquo; and ldquo;Sophisticated Lady;rdquo; remain beloved standards; and he sought inspiration in an endless string of transient lovers; concealing his inner self behind a smiling mask of flowery language and ironic charm. As the biographer of Louis Armstrong; Terry Teachout is uniquely qualified to tell the story of the public and private lives of Duke Ellington. A semi-finalist for the National Book Award; Duke peels away countless layers of Ellingtonrsquo;s evasion and public deception to tell the unvarnished truth about the creative genius who inspired Miles Davis to say; ldquo;All the musicians should get together one certain day and get down on their knees and thank Duke.rdquo;

Its great for a beginner like me to break up the monotony of teach yourself guitar books/DVDs by learning a few of my favorite Metallica riffs. Some are more difficult than others; but theres something in here for everyone.So far; everything Ive learned has been dead on accurate and most importantly fun. There is also some early Metallica history and added commentary/explanations which are cool.Keep in mind that these are just the major riffs; not the entire songs. If youre a more advanced player; cherry lane also offers full album tab books that are great. For a beginner or intermediate player; this is perfect to have some fun and jam with.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Breaks it down wellBy GravyThis book breaks down the intricate; complicated arrangements of Metallica into manageable chunks that are a bit easier to get a handle on.Even so; its not for novices or those who are just starting out on guitar. Get a good grasp of the basics before you try to tackle the monster that is Metallica!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Love MetallicaBy Tomie NelsonThis is a good collection; really intense both rhythm and lead... now if I can find someone to teach me how to play this; not just the guitar I only know basics; Im not an Intermediate or Advanced guitarist yet.
