BowmanIve also reviewed Best of Surf Guitar; 7 songs are the same between the two but the presentation is different. This one has the tablature with no commentary; plus a CD with backing tracks to play against and the option to slow the tempo if youre using a computer; while the other has a technical commentary plus a straight audio CD . I dont have a formal music vocabulary so my preference is for the ability to slow the tempo but both are effective and Best of Surf Guitar has more material. Unless you have a particular interest in the 4 tunes that are not shared you may not want to purchase both.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Nice Surf CollectionBy JPfromOHHal Leonard Corporation has produced dozens and dozens of these book/CD collections in recent years; and this is one of the better ones. For one thing; it represents a nice mix of instrumental and vocal surf standards; including songs made famous by the Beach Boys; Dick Dale; the Ventures; and Jan and Dean. Unlike some of the collections; the backing tracks of the Surf volume have a nice; authentic sound. Of course; the vocals are missing from songs such as "Surfin U.S.A.;" but all the backing instrumentals sound quite similar to those of the original early-1960s recordings. The book; like others in the series; is great for playing along; especially by ear. The one place where all of Hal Leonards play-along books fall short of perfection is in the number of page turns required. If you like to read the tablature or the standard music notation; its a significant problem; particularly when you are trying to negotiate a page turn and play from a transcription of Dick Dales solo line. Overall; though; Hal Leonards Surf volume is one their more consistent and fun packages. Highly recommended!5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Surf Music for Electric guitar (with TAB)By Stephanie BohlenGreat beginner book for electric guitar. I bought this book expecting nothing but Beach Boys music; but has a variety. Can be played by beginners; but most of the notes are in the lower half of the fret board (12-19th fret).
