Skin Tight (Modern Plays)

ebooks Skin Tight (Modern Plays) by Gary Henderson in Arts-Photography

Description

Max Beckmann is widely acknowledged as one of Germanys leading twentieth-century artists. A figurative painter throughout his career; Beckmann depicted the world around him with an unparalleled intensity. His art emerges directly from his experiences of the First and Second World Wars; the political upheavals of the 1920s and 1930s; the rise of Nazism; exile in Amsterdam and his final emigration to the United States. By capturing the objects and events that surrounded him; Beckmann hoped to grasp the deeper mysteries underlying human existence. He perceived and painted the world as a vast stage; at once real and magical; upon which his own life and the traumas of contemporary history were closely intertwined."On My Painting" can give a valuable insight into understanding his work. It was composed in 1938 at a crucial juncture in Beckmanns life; just a year after he was included the ldquo;Degenerate Artrdquo; exhibition in Nazi Germany. It was read by him at the opening of the ldquo;Twentieth Century German Artrdquo; exhibition. With an introduction by Mayen Beckmann; the artists granddaughter; and an afterword by Sean Rainbird.

As always mike inspires5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Inspiring; like so much of watts workBy Mr. J. MccoolNot yer usual photography book; it has to be said... and not a punk photography book neither (no pics of punks - tho PLENTY of Pelicans). However; it IS a great book of photography and thoughtful ravings by a punk GREAT. And Watts greatness is not just because of his musical virtuosity; its because of his attitude: always more jazz than mindless three chord thrash. He approaches photography in a similar way; DIY ethos and chuck your preconceptions away; add a lovin spoonful of beat-up beat poetry on the side. Some of his images are quite sublimely beautiful; a surreal blend of wildlife and found background. All feature Watts beloved San Pedro; often in sun-up rust-red.Is this the worlds first punk-jazz photography book? I think it just might be... Theres more creative juice flowing here than in a zillion Instagraphic iPhone retro fakery-isms. Get this book; be inspired; and go out and do something yourself. I think I will.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Watt!By CowgirlpunkIf youre a fan of the Minutemen or fIREHOSE; this is definitely a book to own. Watts own photos of Pedro are juxtaposed with his various poems and musings...its not a tell-all autobiography. Its something better than that. Its a chance to experience the hometown of the mighty Minutemen through the eyes of one of its founders. A really beautiful deal; man.
