War Graves have personal meaning tooBy Alison WardThose who have visited the cemeteries maintained with respect and love by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission will appreciate the work done by Fabian Ware and his team"Empires of the Dead" describes fully the difficulties they had to overcome ensure that the bodies of the poor and powerless were treated with as much consideration of those of the rich and powerful.I found it very readable and fascinating as well as the; then Imperial War Graves Commission stood up to senior military officials and MPs to do what was right for the War Dead and their families. My own paternal grandfather has no known grave but his name is on a panel at Tyne Cot Cemetery. After reading "Empires of the Dead" I have a clearer idea of how with all came about and am grateful to them for ensuring that Grandfather Sam and the sacrifice he made is not totally overlooked0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Biography of One of the British Empires Greatest VisionariesBy Marco Antonio AbarcaIn August 1914; the forty five year old Fabian Ware was prohibited from joining the British Army because of his age. Using his political contacts; Ware was able to get himself appointed as the leader of the civilian Mobile Ambulance Unit whose responsibilities were to drive wounded soldiers to field hospitals. As Ware and his men drove the battlefields of Belgium and northern France; they realized the British Army had made no provisions for burying the dead or registering their grave sites. They took it upon themselves to arrange for the burial of British soldiers in local cemeteries and church yards. They were meeting an important need for both the British Army and the civilian population back home in Great Britain.Over the course of four years of war; Fabian Ware rose from the rank of the civilian leader of the Mobile Ambulance Unit to a Major General and Vice Chairman of the Imperial War Graves Commission. "Empires of the Dead" is a well written biography of the remarkable Fabian Ware. A tireless organizer and visionary; Ware was able to create a vast network of beautifully conceived and executed cemeteries and war memorials around the world. Although nearly a century separates todays visitors from Fabian Wares life work; his cemeteries and war memorials are still beautifully maintained and visited by hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. His cemeteries and memorials are some of the most long lasting and impressive achievements of the British Empire.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Read this tour de forceBy Victoria C LeoWonderfully executed narrative history; a history of ideas and ideology as;well as who did what when. Superb recreation of the unimaginably awful days of the war; the emotions of the surviving soldiers; the French; Belgian and German home front; and the transition to Nazi days. I was left with a lust to know how all the cemeteries fare today.... hints of Nazi and Libyan desecration just whet a curiosity that wasnt fed. Engrossing. Highly recommended; balanced.
