Born of a Belfast manse; Robert Lynd (1879-1949) became one of the most graceful and favoured writers of the early century; and had some thirty books published in his lifetime. The essays in Galway of the Races represent his writings on Ireland (Protestant and Papish; with accounts of Connolly; Kettle; Griffith; Shaw; Yeats and Joyce); on literature (from Donne to Hazlitt; Keats; Turgenev and Chekhov) and on life at large (the Great War; the British Museum; smoking; sport; walking and other pleasures). A biographical introduction underpins the selection. After two posthumous collections Lynds reputation declined; but forty years on the work of this autobiographer; critic and social observer re-emerges with all its original vitality. These diverse and entertaining essays will give enduring pleasure to a new generation of readers. At times humorous; reflective and anecdotal; bearing witness to the political and cultural events of his day and yet; withal; holding a timeless appeal. It is an excellent selection of Lynd at his most forceful... Here is the voice of a truly great Ulsterman. - Peter Berresford Ellis; Irish Democrat This selection of essays covers a host of topics with zest and elegance and humour. - Robert Greacen; Irish Independent It cant have been easy to choose the essays; since they all attain a high degree of competence and readability. - Patricia Craig; The Irish Times

It has both; and they are VERY gorgeous. However. This book is not a compilation of initials and floral sprays from a variety of sources; rather its a compilation of designs found in two old Spanish embroidery books. Therefore; while gorgeous; the initials are VERY limited. If you need a book that gives you every letter for each style; this is not the book for you. For each design; theres MAYBE 2-5 examples; and some letters arent in the book at all. Most of the floral designs are tied to the initials and monograms; theres not a lot of stand-alone floral designs if youre looking for those. And; most designs are very swirly scrolly fancy. VERY swirly scrolly fancy. I still like it though; because swirly scrolly fancy is kind of what I was looking for. The lack of complete alphabets is a little disappointing; but I think you can still work with it if you have a little imagination and a teeny bit of artistic skill.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. DisappointedBy MamalionThe designs in this book are lovely! However; I was really disappointed because in some of the monogram designs only a few letters are presented and not the entire alphabet relative to that design. The layout of the monogram alphabets is scattered; it is difficult and time consuming to search for a particular letter and design because the book layout is not organized according to alphabetical order or design.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
