Classic starter homesBy ChrijeffThese are true "starter" homes--cozy; compact; most with two or three bedrooms; a few (obviously for newlyweds) with only one. Both one- and two-storey houses are shown; with bungalows and Colonial and English styles the great majority. Each house has one page which includes full floor plans; a picture; dimensions (including the height of the ceilings); and a brief description. Theres also an illustrated essay about decorating and several two-page advertisements (full of detailed explanations of the importance of the particular system) for bathroom fixtures; heating systems; and so on; which will serve to give you an idea of what these conveniences were like in the days when they were becoming common. Houses like these still stand in the older residential districts of most towns; and looking through this book you can see why: they may not have the sheer space of the modern ranch or McMansion; but they do have everything a young family really needs.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Dover does greatBy M OliverI love this little book; I bought it as a reference for a game that I am playing and couldnt help but fall in love with the variety of houses in here. One only has to be aware of the time that these houses were built to truly enjoy them for their simplicity and beauty.12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Fun!By Kristin W.Ive always been interested in old houses; and my recent favorite era is the 20s. This catalog-turned-book thrilled me! It was so much fun to look at the blueprints for houses that contained servants quarters and only one bathroom and to read the silly descriptions. It was like taking a step back in time. I imagine this would be a perfect tool for someone wanting to build a modern version of a 20s-style home ... thats what I hope to do one day.
