Ted uses too many descriptions of what one does wrong in seeing and not enough of explaining how to better visualize and relate what the eye ACTUALLY sees; both the positive and negative space; values and gesture; points and angles and scale. Needs more on the aspects of triangulation and measurement and less artistic platitudes. Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain does a better job at getting the novice the concept of visualizing reality and forgetting symbolisms. I think David Jamison; at Vitruvian Studio has a better concept of how one should approach drawing for accuracy. Just saying. Tim2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Part of My Essential LibraryBy Elizabeth B. TuckerThis book is not for the beginner; but for the artist who wants to see into the body and understand form from more than a superficial level. While drawing what the eye sees; and not what you think it sees; seems to be intimated in the title; what Jacobs really is doing is asking us to hone our eye to see inner curves and how the inter-relationships of parts to the whole fit together. Jacobs drawings are not quite to my taste as they seem to be from the 70s; but his knowledge is excellent. This; and Anthony Ryders; "The Complete Guide to Figure Drawing: A Contemporary Perspective to a Classical Tradition"; are two books that work really well together and are an essential part of my library.12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Be Careful!By GregBe careful if you buy this book. This is an "unabridged republication" or copy by Dover Publications of the original book "Drawing with an Open Mind" by Watson-Guptill. I thoroughly enjoyed the original book but because of my respect for Ted Seth Jacobs felt disappointed and cheated by whoever made the decision to republish it under a different name.
