A reminder of why guys pick up guitars in the first place.By Johnny SideburnsIm not the biggest metalhead out there...that 80s "hair band" scene really didnt do much for me; though I do own 2 Crue CDs. But the great thing about this book is that you dont have to appreciate Motley Crues music (or anyone elses; really) to be completely blown away by the full frontal assault on the senses that these guys have felt the need to relay our way.>It is an amazing look at the runaway train that was arguably the best heavy metal band of the 1980s. The successes; the excesses; and the incalculable Faustian prices paid by each bandmate for them. At times hilarious; shocking; and heartbreaking; the Crue come off as more than the mindless hedonists they were always (if not completely inaccurately) portrayed as being on MTV and the various music publications of yore; they allow their personalities to flow off the pages and as a result you start to see their respective individual characteristics and wonder how they were able to play together for so long without killing each other; if not themselves.>In short; if you enjoyed the Led Zeppelin biography "Hammer of the Gods"; this one will take the shock factor up a notch or two...I read most of it on a plane flight from Atlanta to Salt Lake City and back...its a total page-turner; and a monument to what heavy metal music is; was; and will always be about.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It is like watching a car crash unfold in slow motionBy J. HullAn unbelievable read. If youve ever had any interests in major rock bands; their life styles; how they tend to try and destroy themselves; and ultimately find their own redemption; then this is the book for you! Ill be seeing them on their final tour; and taking 3 of my closest freinds to see them; some for the first time ever; but this is their manual to vest them in the group even deeper before they see them in concert. This band will truly be missed; and never repeated by any other. This is their story; and its every bit of an addictive read as their own fast furious lives and addictions. It is like watching a car crash unfold in slow motion. Every imaginable gut wrenching; disgusting; vile; sad; heart tugging emotion all rolled into one. Open it to any page; and be thoroughly amazed! This is a MUST READ for the 2000s!4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great story with big egos!By J. HaskinsMotley Crue: The Dirt is a collective autobiography about the founding; the life; and pre-drawn conclusion of the band. Neil Strauss did an excellent job formatting the book and getting each members candid take on Motley Crue. Contradicting views are brought together and a few outsiders from the record label also chime in on their experiences with the band. Motley Crues inception set off a controlled explosion; with each member the fuel. Eventually the pressure of the music industrys "Machine" inevitably turned them on each other; ending with members finding themselves on an alone path without Crue.Band members Nikki Sixx; Mick Mars; Tommy Lee; and Vince Neil all offer there own perspectives into the world of Crue. Nikki writes nonstop; lengthy chapters about his family; drug problems; and song writing. Vince writes about his vicious womanizing and hobbies outside the band. Tommy Lee writes much about his role as the fun loving member as well as his helpless romantic side. Micks chapters are short and offer not so much his take on the band but his take on the world and conspiracy theories. Later in the book after Vince leaves the band; John Carabie writes a few chapters about his take on being in Motley Crue and how it changed him.The Motley Crue members take shots at each other then often forgive and feel guilt about how they acted at times of crisis. It is amazing to see how the band changes from being kids jamming in Los Angeles clubs to megastars. Eventually drugs; alcohol; and record label executives brought them to dark places in their personal lives. They get sober; they relapse; and the process repeats itself until you find the band grown up. After the band loses its identity without Vince; executives push the band back together and they somehow get along. This book was a great read; the tales of sex; drugs; rock and roll are timeless. For me the stories arent that old; and it is interesting to look back at the event and see the bands view.
