Description

With a focus on dance innovation from the late 19th century to the present; this history provides dance students with accessible information on the major contributors to the art. Organized chronologically by the decades in which innovators were born or dance organizations were founded; the study shows the similarities and generational character that arise from shared influence. Rather than illustrations or photographs; this modern guide offers links to YouTube videos and other internet references to view examples of the work discussed. The scope is international; with coverage of German; Swedish; Belgian; Dutch; Taiwanese; Russian; Finnish; and Spanish pioneers of the avant-garde to illustrate that dance is a global language that continues to break boundaries and explore new ideas. Just a few of the 120 artists and performers featured include Martha Graham; Doris Humphrey; George Balanchine; Mark Morris; Twyla Tharp; Merce Cunningham; Paul Taylor; Jose Limon; Katherine Dunham; Chunky Move; and Trey McIntyre.

Amazing painter!By Anna SIrsquo;ve been interested in Vallottonrsquo;s stuff since catching his exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris on a holiday. His nudes are amazing - he captures women of all shapes and sizes in a manner of situations (from provocative to fragilehellip;) and each of them feel personal; rather than just coming off a conveyor belt. His still lifes and landscapes are equally good; but just pale in comparison to his paintings of people (to me anyway). Looking at some of his landscapes though; and the colours just hit you ndash; the play of light on a sea scene as the sunrsquo;s going down; or the ripe sheen on an apple ndash; amazing! This book serves as a great introduction to Vallotton. It has a really good biography; and shows his progression from painter to engraver and back to painter again. The choice of paintings are also great. Therersquo;s a good range of his still lifersquo;s and landscapes; and of course a really good selection of his portraits and nudes. Just as a minor note; although it wasnrsquo;t a problem for me; the engravings were given less page space and there werenrsquo;t as many as the rest of his work. Apart from this; I think this is a great introduction to Vallotton and has a really good variety of his works.
