The plot was not that interesting eitherBy Margaret LombardoI found the descriptions of everything; literally everything; tediously long. The plot was not that interesting either.I could not empathize with the protagonist. However I felt that there was a beauty in the language which I couldnot appreciate; since I am not proficient in Italian.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Every page reads like poetry!By UlfilasBefore reading Cosima; I already knew that it was based on the life of the author herself--essentially a Roman a Clef. In order to better prepare myself for reading this book; I decided to first read Carolyn Baldduccis A self-made woman: Biography of Nobel-prize-winner Grazia Deledda. With this biographical information in hand; however; I was surprised to discover how thinly disguised are the people and events in this novel! Deledda even goes so far as use her brothers and sisters as characters in this book without even changing their first names! It is also clear to me that this novel was the source for much of the information in Carolyn Balduccis biography of Deledda. Nevertheless; reading this biography helped me to better understand and appreciate this interesting novel. The most wonderful aspect of this novel is Deleddas recounting of the many stories; legends; and traditions integral to Sardinian culture. Her intimate accounts of family history; eccentricities; and tragedies are both fascinating and deeply moving. Her narrative reminds me of what I know of the Appalachian and Tidewater families of my parents and grandparents. The authors loving descriptions of the land and people of her birth are truly amazing! Every page reads like poetry.I should also note that this novel is written in a form of Italian that is somewhat more formal that that taught and spoken today; especially with respect to personal pronouns. I therefore recommend to the reader an book for learning Italian grammar that treats these pronouns (e.g. "egli" for the male third person nominative singular instead of "lui") such as Duffs "Italian for Beginners" which was published in 1959.One final observation that I will make is that this printing of the novel is very poorly done! The publisher does not even bother to number the pages--let alone the chapters.
