Ive had a few short exchanges with this author in the comments section of YouTube; hes quite a humble guy even though this book shows that he is clearly on point with his jazz guitar knowledge. I like these arrangements; they are an example of how simpler is better in most cases. This is a good lineup of jazz standards and a good way to familiarize yourself with classic tunes. I like to take snippets of this and remove some of the bass notes and play the songs chord solo style a la Montgomery; Barney Kessel or Kenny Burrell. That is different from chord melody as you need a band or a backing track to do that. Works great in conjunction with the iReal app for iPhone.Never; ever underestimate the value of learning melodies and learning how to complete a song from start to finish. Too many people are trying to improvise all over the place without learning how to carry and complete a tune. Although the solo often takes center stage in jazz; remember that it is really just a commentary on the melody and head of the song. Without connection to the song melody; an improvised solo wont make any good sense. As Joe Pass said; learn as many melodies and song heads as you can. This will help you in improvising melodies later on down the road. This book helps you learn those melodies in a fun and exciting way. I bought it to get an arrangement of a nightingale sang in berkley square and was very pleased with it; but the other arrangements sound great to; they flow (voice lead) like all good chord melody. i think this book is up there with those of barry gailbraith and even my all time favorite; jazzing it up by fred sokolow. if you want to learn more about substitutions and the like; or you just enjoy the chord melody sound of the guitar then you cant go wrong here. players that are able can embellish or simplify any given arrangement as the melodic choices are limitless. but in a way with chord melody there really are no levels as a simple arrangement can sound as good as the most advanced; its in the hands of the player.35 of 35 people found the following review helpful. Solid Chord Melody ArrangementsBy CustomerThis is really a great collection of jazz ballads arranged for guitar. I have become pretty skeptical of this type of collection because usually the arrangers either take shortcuts to create arrangements that are too simple; or they over harmonize and use unnecessarily difficult chord substitutions. This collection is guilty of neither of these errors. The keys in almost every case are the same keys the songs were published in and the arrangements are standard jazz chord melody chords. Nothing too advanced; but a good solid performance level interpretation of the harmony. The tunes selected are excellent choices and even the lesser known tunes are beautiful and well worth learning. Most intermediate to advanced players will find themselves subing in some of their own favorite substitutions; but that is what should happen. Even played exactly as arranged; all the chord choices are extremely apt and musical. My only minor complaint is that the endings are routinely unimaginative. Most of the tunes just end on the same sixth chord voicing. I usually just sub in some other favorite ending chord sequences. The tunes included are: * A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square * Blame It On My Youth * Body And Soul * But Beautiful * Darn That Dream * Easy Living * Easy To Love (Youd Be So Easy To Love) * Heres That Rainy Day * I Could Write A Book * In A Sentimental Mood * In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning * Long Ago (And Far Away) * Lover Man (Oh; Where Can You Be?) * Misty * Moonlight In Vermont * My Foolish Heart * My Funny Valentine * My One And Only Love * Nancy - With The Laughing Face * Skylark * Stella By Starlight * The Nearness Of You * The Very Thought Of You * The Way You Look Tonight * Time After Time * When I Fall In Love * When Sunny Gets Blue
