There is an emerging consensus that urban street layouts should be planned with greater attention to lsquo;placemakingrsquo; and urban design quality; while maintaining the conventional transport functions of accessibility and connectivity. However; it is not always clear how this might be achieved: we still tend to have different sets of guidance for main road networks and for local streetgrids. What is needed is a framework that addresses both of these; plus main streets ndash; that donrsquo;t easily fit either set of guidance ndash; in an integrative manner. Streets and Patterns takes up this challenge to create a coherent rationale to underpin todayrsquo;s streets-oriented urban design agenda. Informed by recent research; the book looks behind existing design conventions and beyond immediate policy rhetoric; and analyses a range of first principles ndash; from Le Corbusier and Colin Buchanan to New Urbanism. The book provides a new framework for the design and planning of urban layouts; integrating transport issues such as road hierarchy; arterial streets and multi-modal networks with urban design and planning issues such as street type; grid type; mixed-use blocks and urban design coding.

But dont be fooled by the simplicity of forms. Flaxman was a master of lines and composition. He strips every scene bare; giving us only the essentials of characters; expressions and locations. His drawings are filled with dynamic lines and tension that bring the poetry to life more like sculpture than painting or drawing. This book is a no-brainer purchase for anyone interested in Dante; Flaxman; drawing; and graphic novels. Highly recommended.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. great book but...By steveni love this book but be careful buying anything from BOOKSURF11... very unscrupulous seller1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Neo-classical Master interprets DanteBy Susanna Mary LundgrenJohn Flaxmans 1807 series of engravings for Dantes Commedia (based on drawings of 1793) embodies Enlightenment ideals and expresses the best of Neo-classical style: elegance; restraint; sensitivity to the visual power of empty space well-positioned. Unlike such an artist as David; however; Flaxman is able to avoid the sometimes stilted; chilling effect of this style through the emotional content of his figures in composition. This Dover edition offers the full effect of Flaxmans genius in a convenient; inexpensive format.
