Ted Grant: Sixty Years of Legendary Photojournalism

DOC Ted Grant: Sixty Years of Legendary Photojournalism by Thelma Fayle in Arts-Photography

Description

In August and September of 1988; Yousuf Karshs long-time assistant; Jerry Fielder; sat down with the master photographer and taped over 9 hours of recollections of the many portrait sessions hed experienced in one of the greatest careers in history. Karsh spoke of his sitters and his rags-to-riches life; including much that had never before been revealed or recorded. Previously; Karsh had often paired his full-page portraits with stories of his encounters with famous sitters. However; as his oelig;uvre grew; the photographs soon eclipsed the commentary; and his essays were often edited down to captions. Drawing from the newly rediscovered 1988 recordings; Karsh: Beyond the Camera reestablishes the original presentation of Karshs work; pairing each photograph with the story of its making on the facing page. Here; Karshs portraits are elucidated and complemented both by his own recollections and by the text of veteran curator David Travis. The resulting book; with its chronological rather than thematic arrangement of portraits; is a study of Karshs artistic and stylistic development; offering the reader an unparalleled tour through the greatest images of the photographers life work.As much as Karsh wrote about his portrait sessions; he rarely revealed what he thought about himself. Travis constructs the compelling history of how a brilliant technician behind the camera was able to go beyond the studio trappings to plumb the psychological realm all great portrait photographers must navigate and master. Although Karsh had a deep understanding of the human psyche; he worked on an emotional level rather than an analytical one. Thus; his stories seldom addressed what he thought about his artistic experiences. This essential element of Karshs work is what David Travis locates and fills in; drawing not only from the anecdotes themselves; but from the one thing that has been missing from all publications prior to this ndash; the photographers voice.

A MUST read. . . .My beloved MUSE!By Working on itI very seldom read the introductions to books; but I am clinging to every word this author has to offer. I only got it yesterday; but I find myself sneaking time to try and read about my beloved band MUSE. I am thumbing through it; but promised myself on my business trip next week; I will read from top to bottom. I am 50 years old. Seen the Rolling Stones (zzzzz); Pearl Jam several times (meh); etc. but NO band has EVER captivated me like MUSE. This book will take you into the brilliant and often complex minds of the band members; especially Matts writing style; but in a gentle manner. I highly recommend this book for all MUSE lovers; like me. I only wish I had learned of them other than 3 years ago. . .look at all of the time we have missed out on.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great for any Muse fan.By JonathanSolid book. Very informative. Although the focus is a lot on Matt. I wouldve liked to seen the growth of Dom and Chris as well. Although they are referenced; I feel like they are more in the background. Overall; a must own for any Muse fan. Its great how the songs are broken down. Id suggest listening to the albums and check out live performances and videos as you read along with the book. I defiantly felt a greater appreciation with each albums as I read this book.2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Loving my Favorite Band Even More After Reading ThisBy Stephen A.
