Before you build a High Line in your town; read this.By Troy TorrisonNew Urbanists wanted to bring back classic American town design and European-style walkable streets. Americans; for the most part shrugged and kept choosing classic suburban sprawl with giant; un-walkable parking lots and cul de sacs...but where New Urbanist towns have been tried theyve been notably successful. But besides apathy there has arisen another force opposing force: Landscape Urbanists. Without going into all the arguments made by the LU folks; this book contains essays that rebut their points and critique the various LU examples (mainly sui generis places like The High Line). Its not a heavy read; although it does get a bit jargon-y at times. Worth checking out for the funny Kunstler rant alone.15 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Very useful to an understanding of modern architecture and urban designBy Tim SmithA bunch of essays against the urban landscaping movement (just plant bushes; and they will be content).Until I read this book; I wasnt aware of this "controversy"; though I had been reading James Howard Kunstlers screeds for quite a few years. Kunstler is a great polemicist; and an excellent writer; and it was that an essay of his was included in this collection that made me buy it.And his essay; polemical and overwrought as it was; made me happy to have bought the book. The other essays were more sober; and perhaps even academic. But they were educating.7 of 11 people found the following review helpful. save your moneyBy Fred McCollyhorrendous academic infighting...a tempest in a teapot over who "really" represents the "new urbanism"...the essays in this book are a full bore assault on "landscape urbanism" which is inane since the "new urbanism" isnt any less superficial. the contention that a new social and cultural order can come from design is manifestly insane;..but thats what theyre on about...save your money...or spend it on a functional book...like one about gardening...you can; at least; eat the results of that.
