The Bards of Bromley and Other Plays (Oberon Modern Playwrights)

DOC The Bards of Bromley and Other Plays (Oberon Modern Playwrights) by Perry Pontac; Maureen Lipman in Arts-Photography

Description

The very first biography of Peter Tosh; rude boy; founder member of The Wailers and a compelling recording artist in his own right.Tosh was Jamaicarsquo;s most controversial reggae star. A fiery advocate of Rastafari and African nationalism as well as the legalisation of marijuana; his uncompromising political stance won him a reputation as Jamaicarsquo;s Malcolm X.Now revered second only to Bob Marley among reggae audiences worldwide; Tosh was awarded the Order of Merit; Jamaicarsquo;s third highest honour; as the nation celebrated 50 years of Independence.Based on hundreds of interviews with those who knew Peter Tosh best; including Bunny Wailer and close associates; here are the stories behind hits like lsquo;Legalise Itrsquo;; lsquo;Equal Rightsrsquo;; lsquo;Get Up Stand Uprsquo; and lsquo;Johnny B. Goodersquo;; Toshrsquo;s infamous appearance at the 1978 One Love Peace Concert; and his now legendary adventures with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. One of reggaersquo;s most extraordinary stories; the life of Peter Tosh came to an end when he was brutally murdered in 1987 amidst rumours involving the supernatural and Kingstonrsquo;s criminal underworld. This is his story.

I bought the first version in book form and it really helped in developing my rhythm skills for different types of music. I had music theory and knew my way around the fingerboard musically but i did not have a very large beat skill set. I could do blues and rock but I wanted to expand into reggae and Latin beats. This book does a great job of giving you the ability to play different styles of music plus giving the history of each style. My wife; who is not a musician; enjoyed reading it just for the historical background. A couple of years later I found out that the author was giving lessons not too far away from the town I live in and decided to take lessons from him as well; if that isnt a sterling recommendation I dont know what it. But he does such a good job in the book that I havent really felt the need for lessons in a while; the book has been answering my questions and giving me lessons just on its own. That is not to say that any book can take the place of one-on-one lessons but this has become a pretty good replacement for the time being. I would recommend though that you get a good handle on how to play bass lines musically before depending on this book as it is mainly aimed toward rhythm; but isnt that what we are all about? It is a good companion though as you develop your style.Highly recommendedP.S. I later on bought the kindle version of the 2nd edition so I can always have a copy nearby.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
