The Cambridge Companion to August Wilson (Cambridge Companions to Literature)

audiobook The Cambridge Companion to August Wilson (Cambridge Companions to Literature) by Christopher Bigsby in Arts-Photography

Description

One of Americas most powerful and original dramatists; August Wilson offered an alternative history of the twentieth century; as seen from the perspective of black Americans. He celebrated the lives of those seemingly pushed to the margins of national life; but who were simultaneously protagonists of their own drama and evidence of a vital and compelling community. Decade by decade; he told the story of a people with a distinctive history who forged their own future; aware of their roots in another time and place; but doing something more than just survive. Wilson deliberately addressed black America; but in doing so discovered an international audience. Alongside chapters addressing Wilsons life and career; and the wider context of his plays; this 2007 Companion dedicates individual chapters to each play in his ten-play cycle; which are ordered chronologically; demonstrating Wilsons notion of an unfolding history of the twentieth century.

WelchThough I am not a "dummy" when it comes to digital photography; I have quite enjoyed several "...for Dummies" books for the simple reason that they are packed with information; in an easy to read format. "Digital Wedding Photography for Dummies" is no exception. In terms of wedding photography; I am not a pro; but have shot at weddings for friends and relatives as a back-up to their hired pro and captured; from comments I have received; some excellent shots (even back in the day with my trusty point-and-shoot; before I got into DSLR). Now I am toying with the idea of going pro and wanted to gain more perspective from people who are doing it. Author/Photographer Amber Murphy does a very good job in formatting the book and its contents. As she says up front; you may not need to read all of it; just what you need to know at the time. That said; she starts off with the basics (like getting to know the future bride and groom to your gear selection) and guides you through what can be a stressful event if you are not fully prepared (like having extra battery packs with you; "just in case"). Covering topics such as various photographic styles; lighting; even editing photos after the event and how to present them to the couple is done with care and pretty good style. Again; easy to understand and follow throughout. Murphy finishes the book with creating a business plan; covering some of the legal basics and explaining various ways to grow your business which are logical and straightforward; however; being recently published it covers more areas than some; possibly even better - but older - wedding how-to books; making it more relevant to the times.More advanced photographers may find redundant or already well-known information in this book (such as exposure; shutter speed; lighting); but there may also be a few morsels that are new. That; to me; makes these Dummies books particularly worthwhile. The shots she included in the book are not what I would call fantastic; but most were very good and I am sure the couples loved them. I did anticipate that there would be some more artistic type of shots; as well as a better variety of twilight and night time outdoors shots. Overall; Murphy did a good job with this book and it looks like I may just enter this field.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. And it is well above the "Dummies" level (never liked the name anyway)By Ronald JonesThis is really worth the money... if you are an amateur or enthusiast and are planning on informally shooting a wedding for a friend or family member; this is for you. And it is well above the "Dummies" level (never liked the name anyway). It is a good starting point to get you prepared to produce a worthy product; not a professional one but a very good one. You can move on to more complex books from here but; honestly; I would read this one first. It will probably be all you need unless you intend on going pro.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A great way to get ahead....By CatI have always been interested in all that goes into photography for weddings! After ordering this book; and reading through it; I can honestly say that I have a new found appreciation for photographers that exemplify the quality photos like those that are found in this book. Amber is a great photographer and this is only the beginning of a legacy she will leave behind for many to follow in the upcoming years. This was an easy read; and extremely understandable for the "dummies" like myself! Well written and beautifully displayed!
