The Cambridge Companion to Bruckner (Cambridge Companions to Music)

DOC The Cambridge Companion to Bruckner (Cambridge Companions to Music) by From Cambridge University Press in Arts-Photography

Description

This Companion provides an overview of the composer Anton Bruckner (1824ndash;1896). Sixteen chapters by leading scholars investigate aspects of his life and works and consider the manner in which critical appreciation has changed in the twentieth century. The first section deals with Bruckners Austrian background; investigating the historical circumstances in which he worked; his upbringing in Upper Austria; and his career in Vienna. A number of misunderstandings are dealt with in the light of recent research. The remainder of the book covers Bruckners career as church musician and symphonist; with a chapter on the neglected secular vocal music. Religious; aesthetic; formal; harmonic; and instrumental aspects are considered; while one chapter confronts the problem of the editions of the symphonies. Two concluding chapters discuss the symphonies in performance; and the history of Bruckner-reception with particular reference to German Nationalism; the Third Reich and the appropriation of Bruckner by the Nazis.

BennettThis book is a collection of columns and blog posts made by the photojournalist Alex Garcia when he worked for the Chicago Tribune. Garcia is a talented photographer and a decent writer; and the book is full of excellent photos presented well. Because of the origin of the essays; the overall feel is somewhat disjointed and random -- we move from a list of "10 tips" to a short essay on down-and-dirty lighting to "6 Extremely Common Mistakes." There is some discussion of equipment early in the book. Later; however; the book has numerous useful essays on portraiture; lighting; logistics; and creativity. This is not a really photojournalism primer or textbook; though taken in its entirety it does become something of a "how to" book. Certainly any experienced photojournalist will be nodding and smiling in recognition throughout the book. The early release of this book apparently had some formatting issues; but this version is better (though there are still a couple of problems.) It looks great on my full size iPad; but it wouldnt work at all on a phone.Recommended for working photojournalists; and anyone who wants a peek inside that world.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Documentary+Art=Alex GarciaBy Stanley LearyThe key to great photojournalism is the blending of documentary and art. Alex Garcia gives away some of the cornerstones of the foundation of photojournalism.Very few photojournalists are able teach that are at the level of shooting and doing that Alex operates. He is truly a master teacher of the subject. This is a must read for those wish to learn how to be a photojournalist.Stanley Leary0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Excellent; practical photography bookBy Mark V. KrajnakIve been a big fan of Alexs work and blog for quite awhile. His photos have a fantastic quality to them; whether the warm portrait or finding the light in busy downtown Chicago. His writing and teaching is great also. I enjoyed the practical examples and real-life situations used to illustrate the chapters. Anyone interested in photojournalism; as well as just the desire to shoot better photos will find this book helpful.
