Extremely useful guide to gardens of the Tri-state areaBy Kindle CustomerMagda Salvesen; art historian and curator of the expressionist painter Jon Scheulers estate; has written a compact and very informative guide to publicly available gardens in the New York area; all within a three hours driving range of the city. Some of the gardens may be familiar ones; such as Storm King or Old Westbury Gardens; but many of the gardens will be unfamiliar to the general public - and perhaps even to those in the garden business. There are 148 gardens profiled in the book; each is clearly marked on the 29 area maps that appear for every region. The gardens are listed alphabetically by state; and each entry is prefaced by the gardens address; website; and hours of operation. Ms. Salvesen; a lecturer on garden history at the New York Botanical Garden and elsewhere; also thoughtfully includes information for each site on nearby eateries; public transportation options; handicap-accessibility as well as other sites of interest in the neighborhood. While each garden has a few paragraphs of description; Salvesen focuses mainly on the history of the garden; with a few details about what may be found growing there. The entries are never longer than one or two pages; making the book portable and small enough to carry around in a glove compartment or a backback when on an excurstion. It is a welcome and necessary addition to the many garden books that have been written over the years about the tri-state region. Highly recommended.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
