The book provides an in-depth examination into Bernsteins life and career; while spending a lot of time with the important pieces. The analyses require a solid music background; but are not of the quality you would find in a music theory journal. I recommend this to music undergraduates looking to learn more about one of Americas greatest composers; conductors; and educators. It comes with a helpful bibliography and discography in case youre interested in finding more sources.
