The City: A Vision in Woodcuts (Dover Fine Art; History of Art)

ebooks The City: A Vision in Woodcuts (Dover Fine Art; History of Art) by Frans Masereel in Arts-Photography

Description

Painter; designer; and filmmaker Salvador Daliacute; (1904ndash;1989) was one of the most colorful and controversial figures in 20th-century art. A pioneer of Surrealism; he was both praised and reviled for the subconscious imagery he projected into his paintings; which he sometimes referred to as "hand-painted dream photographs."This early autobiography; which takes him through his late thirties; is as startling and unpredictable as his art. It is superbly illustrated with over 80 photographs of Daliacute; and his works; and scores of Daliacute; drawings and sketches. On its first publication; the reviewer of Books observed: "It is impossible not to admire this painter as writer. As a whole; he . . . communicates the snobbishness; self-adoration; comedy; seriousness; fanaticism; in short the concept of life and the total picture of himself he sets out to portray."Daliacute;s flamboyant self-portrait begins with his earliest recollections and ends at the pinnacle of his earliest successes. His tantalizing chapter titles and headnotes mdash; among them "Intra-Uterine Memories;" "Apprenticeship to Glory;" "Permanent Expulsion from the School of Fine Arts;" "Dandyism and Prison;" "I am Disowned by my Family;" "My Participation and my Position in the Surrealist Revolution;" and "Discovery of the Apparatus for Photographing Thought" mdash; only hint at the compelling revelations to come. Here are fascinating glimpses of the brilliant; ambitious; and relentlessly self-promoting artist who designed theater sets; shop interiors; and jewelry as readily as he made surrealistic paintings and films. Here is the mind that could envision and create with great technical virtuosity images of serene Raphaelesque beauty one moment and nightmarish landscapes of soft watches; burning giraffes; and fly-covered carcasses the next. For anyone interested in 20th-century art and one of its most gifted and charismatic figures; The Secret Life of Salvador Daliacute; is must reading.

There are a total of 100 different facts about spiders in here. The book starts with general facts about spiders; and then moves on to more specialized information on the most well-known spiders; many of which also happen to be the most deadly to humans. The spiders discussed in detail within these pages include the Black Widow; the Brazilian Wandering Spider; the Brown Recluse; the Crab Spider; the Jumping Spider; and the Tarantula. The book is illustrated with spiders and their webs; and the sections about specific spiders are illustrated with pictures of those types of spiders; which is great for identification purposes. And since many of these spiders are poisonous; that is especially important. The facts expressed in this book appear accurate and many of these facts were both uprising and intriguing to me.Im slightly arachnophobic; but I still enjoyed learning about spiders. This book is great for anyone; but its especially good for kids; who can learn more about nature and hopefully be inspired to become scientists who can make the world a better place. I think many people are afraid of spiders; and maybe they should be; since some spiders are pretty dangerous. However; spiders are also very interesting and useful... especially their ability to make silk and spin webs.I received this book at a discount in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Recommended! Full of fun and interesting info and pictures on Snakes!By Small~Town~GirlMy great nephew and I love to read together. He is five and absolutely adores learning books and quoting facts; already! I figured this series of ldquo;101 Super Fun Facts and Amazing Picturesrdquo; books would be an excellent choice for us to enjoy together. I ordered the eBooks on each of these subjects: Snakes; Penguins; Sea Turtles; Spiders; Dolphins; and Dinosaurs. He loved each of these books.I thought we would just sit down and read all of these books; all in a row; but these are substantial books; so we did two per sitting/day and this worked out well for his age. Despite them being long books with a lot of information for a 5-year-old; he enjoyed them each and they held his interest the whole time; even with a bit of fidgetiness toward the end. He loved choosing the order we read them in and enjoyed each of the subjects equally as much as the others. These books could be written just for him and his interests. There is a lot of information in them and we both learned a lot. I can definitely see us revisiting each of these books over and over in the future; soaking up a little more of that info each time; which is excellent. I have a feeling he will be quoting the facts he learned in these books to his sisters and parents quite a bit.I received these eBooks free in exchange for writing an honest and unbiased review. Again; these are each great books; full of fun and interesting information. We would both recommend them for 5-year-olds and above; in general; depending on the childrsquo;s interest level. I take writing product reviews very seriously; as I rely heavily on reviews of others when considering purchases. I hope this review has been helpful to you.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great Fun Fact ebook offered for free right now. Janet Evans has several other "101 Fun Facts" books for free as well....By ElizabethThis ebook is offered for free right now so at that price its definitely a 5 star review. ....But even if it wasnt; it would be at least a 4 star reviewing depending on the price. There are some really awesome pictures of spiders in the book. Spiders are not my favorite creature and so Im getting the willies just reviewing this book. But honestly; I really like this book because its just like the title says...101 Super Fun Facts. My kids love Fun Fact books. This book is great because it goes into a little more detail than other "fun fact" kind of books Ive read recently. For example:One fact is that states "Spiders have pedipalps which are leg like parts that are located near the fangs. They use this body part to pin down their prey." So if someone (like me) didnt know what pedipalps were; it is clearly defined here. Also; in the introduction this book states; "Many people seem to think that spiders are insects. But the truth is; they are not; they belong to the arachnid family. Mites; ticks and scorpions are close relatives of spiders." This isnt even considered one of the facts so this book has some cool bonus "facts."The book is broken down into about 8 chapters. The first one is the introduction with about 26 fun facts. At the end is a conclusion with a couple paragraphs about spiders and their natural enemies. All the chapters in between talk about different types of spiders including the Black Widow; Brown Recluse and the Tarantula. So all in all a great book especially for free!!Check out other 101 Fun Fact books by Janet Evans. Seems many of them are offered for free and these are great ebook to keep on your device for kids of all ages***** I received this book for free in exchange for my honest review. *****
