Oedipus Rex is the greatest of the Greek tragedies; a profound meditation on the human condition. The story of the mythological king; who is doomed to kill his father and marry his mother; has resonated in world culture for almost 2;500 years. But Sophoclesrsquo; drama as originally performed was much more than a great storymdash;it was a superb poetic script and exciting theatrical experience. The actors spoke in pulsing rhythms with hypnotic forward momentum; making it hard for audiences to look away. Interspersed among the verbal rants and duels were energetic songs performed by the chorus.

Having recently directed a production of this show;this proved invaluable while working on it! And the price could not be beat!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy Marilyn R. RussellFabulous score; so playable.6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. This is the real thing - other reviews are about another itemBy Leacute;on Monneacute; The reviews by Mr. Church and Hailey Haven are not about this item (the Full Vocal Score); but about the Vocal Selections (as is stated). I agree completely with Mr. Church that the Vocal Selections from the film are pourly cut.The Full Vocal Score however contains ALL the music from the stage show (original version; not the Sam Mendes revival in which three songs from the film were added); including Playouts; Changes of Scene; Entracte; Curtain calls and Exit music. Also it gives you the instrumentation of different musical layers. (Dont bother to "Look Inside TM" to see what I mean: this link brings you to the Vocal Selections which as I already pointed out is a completely different item). Furthermore: spiral bound; so it stays open on your piano!Nevertheless there are two negative notes:- only songs from the show (not Mein Herr; Maybe this time; Money-money)- no chord symbolsIf you only look for the songs (and ALL the songs with chords; both show agrave;nd film) Id recommend "The Complete Cabaret Collection - Authors edition". But then you miss all incidental music and notes about instrumentation. So I (preparing and musically arranging a production of the whole show) settled for this solution: the Full Vocal Score with most of the music (204 pages of sheet music and only 4 pages of accompanying text!) and photocopying of the songs that are not in the original show (but in the film). Too bad theres no "Definitive Cabaret Collection" to suit every mans wishes...Update June 2008: my show has been played 5 times to great succes and good reviews; especially praising the orchestra. This orchestra could only have played so good thanks to the arrangements; for which I have made thorough use of the Full Vocal Score I bought in November 2007. This item has helped me a lot!
