Description

The eye is the primary meansmdash;though not the only means because humans also hear; smell; taste; feel; and perhaps sense a hidden sixth dimensionmdash;with which we interpret our surroundings. Often; however; the eye does not work as it should. Eyeglasses are the answer. The first true eyeglasses were made in Italy in about 1286 and have been constantly refined and improved since then. It is commonly accepted that the American printer; inventor; statesman; and man-about-town Benjamin Franklin of Philadelphia invented bifocalsmdash;a life-saver for older eyeglass wearersmdash;and several paintings of him portray him wearing glasses. Although the basic eyeglass design has changed little since Benjamin Franklinrsquo;s time; the materials and processes used to fashion todayrsquo;s eyeglasses have improved dramatically. Not only do modern eyeglasses improve the wearerrsquo;s vision; they also protect the wearerrsquo;s eyes from sun damage. Eyeglass frames and lens colors are considered by many to be fashion statements of the utmost importance. Elton John is an excellent example of this belief. The eyeglass frames highlighted in this book are only a very small sampling of the entire universe of designs available today to the eyeglass wearer.

Why did I wait so long?By bas bleuWhen I finished the last page; I immediately went to page one and started reading this book again.Written in 1916; during the last part of WW One; D.H. Lawrence shares his observations mostly in Italy on how the industrial age is teetering on the brink of changing the face of Italy - and the rest of Europe forever; and Lawrence mourns for what will be lost. He introduces us to the people and their disappearing life style. He tells us how they live; and think; and what they believe. The old ways are contrasted with how the young adults live; and think and what they believe. Lawrence describes in detail the landscapes; the weather; the feel of the different places he visits; the aura of the old and the new; how all this effects the people. The key thing that compels me to come back to this book; and haunts me since I finished it the first time is Lawrences abilityto describe any subject he is focusing on with the brightest clarity I have ever encountered. He hiked through part of Switzerland; Germany and a bit of Austria and gives us much time with him in Italy. Along this entire journey he has an ability to totally absorb the essence of the people; the changes taking place; the yesterdays and the tomorrows and he does not just translate them to his readers he infuses us with the knowing of these people and places as if we had been part of the knowing of them for years. Meaning the amount of time it takes to know a place and people intimately. He lets us look in a crystal ball and we see and know the old ways and see and know what the new ways will change. It is all here in Lawrences amazing writings; captured forever like in a time capsule.Phenomenal writing; I am hooked.42 of 43 people found the following review helpful. Truly great writingBy Constant WeederI found myself reading; rereading; and rereading aloud; passages from this beautiful work. Lawrence writes poetically--never mind the sportswriters rule against repeating the same word in a sentence ("Angels;" "Seraphs;" "Halos")--this author uses "dark" numerous times in a single paragraph. I felt as though I were in northern Italy with him. Incredible. Also recommended are his other travel works; such as Sea and Sardinia and Mornings in Mexico.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. good read classicBy imollyqgood read classic
