Still the Best Resource on Musical FormsBy Richard MathisenDonald Francis Toveyrsquo;s The Forms of Music was published in 1944; yet is still the best available resource about musical forms. The articles were written for the Encyclopaedia Britannica starting in 1906; substantially revised in 1929; then gathered after Toveyrsquo;s death and published in 1944 as Musical Articles From the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Today; they are valuable for any lover of classical music. How can articles so old still remain the best resource about musical forms? Tovey combined erudition and analytical ability with great writing skill. He knew the entire classical repertory; but was also an expert on obscure subjects such as the Gregorian chant; fugue; and madrigals and motets. Above all; Tovey focused on the purpose and communicative aspect of music rather than on dry academic forms. The result is a work that continues to enlighten music-lovers today. The articles are presented in alphabetical order. The first article on ldquo;Ariardquo; sets the stage; establishing the chronological priority of vocal music over instrumental music (which did not come into its own until after 1600). ldquo;Contrapuntal Forms;rdquo; ldquo;Counterpoint;rdquo; and ldquo;Fuguerdquo; appear in that sequence; while articles on ldquo;Sonatardquo; and ldquo;Sonata Formsrdquo; come later and are perhaps the most interesting. In ldquo;Sonata Forms;rdquo; Tovey skips the usual discussion of exposition; development and recapitulation. Instead; he starts from the difference between ternary form and binary form (acknowledging that the terminology is poorly chosen but customary). Ternary form (ABA) has an ldquo;Ardquo; section that ends in the Tonic key; thus being complete in itself. It becomes the prototype of similar forms such as rondo form (ABACA). Binary form (AABB) has an ldquo;Ardquo; section that ends in a key other than the tonic (often the Dominant key). Used originally for dance forms; binary form later becomes the progenitor of sonata form. The essence of sonata form is the dramatization of the key change from the Tonic key of the first subject to the key of the second subject. This is an unusual way to discuss sonata form; but one that helps the reader make sense of the underlying musical logic.Highly recommended for any music-lover interested in musical forms.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. OK as a dictionaryBy travel light and smilingThis is kind of a glossary of musical terms; with a little bit to description. It would be good for total beginners. I was hoping to learn more about music theory by having it; and wont.
