SaretzkyWhile I agree with another reviewer that the omission of Brett Weston is a serious oversight; it would take more than this three-volume set to include all the significant photographers of the Twentieth-Century or the editor would have had to cut down the entries significantly to a length comparable to the Macmillan Biographical Encyclopedia of Photographic Artists Innovators. Brett Weston is not the only well known photographer who does not appear; just in that section of the alphabet; one would have liked to have seen Alex Webb and Dan Weiner; among others. Personally; I would have preferred if the editors had placed the subject essays on topics like Propaganda in a separate volume from the biographies. But this reference of more than 1;700 pages is still very useful for the numerous well written biographies and essays on thematic topics of several pages each. The biographies include pertinent lists of exhibitions; selected works; and suggestions for further reading.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. if Kindle price isnt a joke; the set certainly isBy reviews again$524 seriously? what a joke. Ive seen enough of these high priced editions; this is greed over substance; I dont care what author or publisher think of themselves; but clearly far more that they can deliver; this is not an antique store where you can claim to have a golden piece for sale; so downlowad sample; myltpily that to get an idea what youre gpiong to get for half a grand; rediculous; better yet ... there is no sample4 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Incomplete and BiasedBy Book CollectorAny "encyclopedia" of Twentieth Century Photography that overlooks "the child genius of American photography" - an artist who made the first breakthrough photographs of negative space as the subject of a photograph as well as "the greatest sand dune in the history of photography" - namely Brett Weston - merely because he was the son of renowned Edward Weston; has demonstrated a bias that is unacceptable and a glaring historical oversight.
