American modernism (e.g. abstract art and bebop) was used by the CIA and others as a Cold War weapon both in Western and Eastern Europe. Along with that came a redefinition of modernism as unrestricted individual freedom; apolitical and stripped of any of the subtler and more complex aspects -- a very American redefinition; and one suitable for Cold War needs.Im now wondering whether this particular definition of modernism didnt laso influence American culture. Pre-WWII American liberalism also was a lot more than just unrestricted individual freedom; and part of that was also stripped out during the 50s and 60s.There is a wealth of research in this book and my capsule summary is quite inadequate.
