The End of Tradition?

PDF The End of Tradition? by From Routledge in Arts-Photography

Description

Rooted in real world observations; this book questions the concept of tradition - whether contemporary globalization will prove its demise or whether there is a process of simultaneous ending and renewing. In his introduction; Nezar Alsayyad discusses the meaning of the word tradition and the current debates about the end of tradition. Thereafter the book is divided into three parts. The three chapters in part I explore the inextricable link between tradition and modern; revealing the geopolitical implications of this link. Part II looks at tradition as a process of invention and here the three chapters are all concerned with the making of landscapes and landscape myths; showing how the spectacle of history can be aestheticized and naturalized. Finally; Part III shows how traditionis a regime; programmed and policed and how it has been deployed; resisted; and reworked through hegemonic struggles that seek to create both built environments and citizen-subjects.

There were many things I learned about his childhood and life that I found fascinating. I have always loved his music; but after reading the book I have a much deeper appreciation of the man he was. A true gentleman and keen band leader. If you love the Blues; and love Howlin Wolfs music; you must read; "Moanin At Midnight".The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 were only because much of what I learned in the book was repeated several times in different chapters. I found that a little bothersome; but that is only my opinion. Enjoy the book.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Excellent; readable biography of the great Howlin WolfBy Tony KingA wonderfully written biography of the great Howlin Wolf. Provides a nice mix of the historical progression of his career along with discussion of the music (for example; not just recording dates). All in a very readable form. As I think others have said it is certainly one of the most readable musician biographies I have read. Learned a lot and it was an easy read.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A great book! A must have for a fan of the Blues; or even someone interested in history.By bull dozerI enjoyed this book. It felt evocative of a particular time; location(s); and an American musical subculture. A lot of interesting stories about Howlin Wolf; Hubert Sumlin; and the rest of Wolfs band. And a lot of information on other blues musicians who were either Wolfs mentors; friends; or rivals. And a lot of interesting information as to how people thought 100 years ago to 40 years ago which is in some ways the same; and in some ways different than how people think today.
