Description

In DetailTake a smartphone from your pocket; and within a few seconds; you can snap a photo; manipulate it; and share it with the world. You have just achieved mass production of image data. With a computer vision library such as OpenCV; you can analyze and transform copious amounts of image data in real time on a mobile device. The upshot to this is that you; as developers; can provide mobile users with many new kinds of images; constantly highlighting certain visual features that are of artistic or practical interest. Android is a convenient platform for such experiments because it uses a high-level language (Java); it provides standardized interfaces for sharing image data between applications; and it is mostly open source; so everyone can study its implementation.Android Application Programming with OpenCV is a practical; hands-on guide that covers the fundamental tasks of computer visionmdash;capturing; filtering; and analyzing images-with step-by-step instructions for writing both an application and reusable library classes.Android Application Programming with OpenCV looks at OpenCVs Java bindings for Android and dispels mysteries such as which version of these bindings to use; how to integrate with standard Android functionality for layout; event handling; and data sharing; and how to integrate with OpenGL for rendering. By following the clear; concise; and modular examples provided in this book; you will develop an application that previews; captures; and shares photos with special effects based on color manipulation; edge detection; image tracking; and 3D rendering.Beneath the application layer; you will develop a small but extensible library that you can reuse in your future projects. This library will include filters for selectively modifying an image based on edge detection; 2D and 3D image trackers; and adapters to convert the Android systems camera specifications into OpenCV and OpenGL projection matrices. If you want a quick start in computer vision for Android; then this is the book for you.By the end of Android Application Programming with OpenCV; you will have developed a computer vision application that integrates OpenCV; Android SDK; and OpenGL.ApproachA step-by-step tutorial to help you master computer vision and mobile app development.Who this book is forThis book is for Java developers who are new to computer vision and who would like to learn about how it is used in relation to application development. It is assumed that you have previous experience in Java; but not necessarily Android. A basic understanding of image data (for example pixels and color channels) would be helpful too. You are expected to have a mobile device running Android 2.2 (Froyo) or greater and it must have a camera.

Review

I spent much of my early adulthood living in Milwaukee; and personally experienced much of the rock and roll from 1970 to the middle 80s as described in Widens book. Hanging out with Cheap Trick at Hannahs night club. Styx; playing at the Milwaukee lakefront at a spot known as the "alternate site"; playing in my own band; JetPak; at the lakefront; "gun club" site; opening for Crossfire (the band that became Bad Boy); and yes; attending the Bruce Springsteen "bomb scare" show at the Uptown Theater. However. I was disappointed at the number of omissions; inaccuracies; and factually incorrect items in the book. I will name three right off the bat. Widen talks about Tom Pettys appearance at the Uptown Theater in 1979 in support of the "Damn the Torpedoes" album; but says nothing about Pettys 1978 appearance at the Electric Ballroom for barely 50 people in support of the "Youre Gonna Get It" album (one of the absolutely finest shows Ive ever attended.) Then; during the discussion about Springsteens 1975 "bomb scare" show at the Uptown Theater; he writes on how long it took to search the theater for the alleged bomb; "..and the band waited in a bar across the street." Actually; the band went back to the bar at the Pfister Hotel; a fact that Bruce alludes to in the excellent bootleg recording that survives the show. Then; in talking about Stevie Ray Vaughans appearances at Summerfest; he writes; "Vaughans previous area appearances included Summerfest in 1984 and 1986.". But; what about Stevie Rays July 1; 1983 Summerfest appearance? For what its worth; Dave Tianans superb book "Summerfest: Cooler by the Lake: 40 Years of Music and Memories" has a complete listing of all the headlining artists which appeared at Summerfest from 1968 through 2006. Ultimately; I admire Larry Widens very good; but flawed effort.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Short but sweetBy MagyarWarning: Book is less than 100 pages long. And it is mainly photos. But; the photos are very interesting. Native Milwaukeeans would find this more interesting than someone (like myselff) who has lived here only in the current century. Most of the clubs discussed no longer exist. I; also; expected more about the Winter Dance Party of 59. But a RR or Blues fan will be excited about all of the geat photos.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Milwaukee Music SceneBy JanlynnVery interesting look at the music scene in the early days of Milwaukee. Heard the author on TV and that got me interested to read more of his stories.
