I never had the opportunity to speak to them about their journey to the United States since I dont speak Chinese. My parents rarely spoke of their past when they were alive. The book gave me a better understanding and appreciation of the sacrifices my parents made for us.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good readBy Comedy LoverBought this for my 85 year old mom who used to take me to Locke when I was in high school over 35 years ago. This Book Tells About The History Of Locke And The Sacramento Delta Region.By WilliamThis is an interesting book about the history of the Sacramento Delta Chinatowns. Here is some of the information that this book mentions: Locke is the only surviving Chinese town in the United States built for and by the Chinese. By 1870; some historians estimate that the Chinese made up as much as 90% of the agricultural workers in CA. The Sacramento River Delta stretches from the town of Freeport in the North to Rio Vista in the South. Until recently; it was inhabited almost exclusively by the Chinese. Locke was named after George Locke and there is a picture of him in 1932 in the book. The town of Walnut Grove was settled in 1850 and is the only town in the Delta on both sides of the Sacramento River. The townrsquo;s name was derived from the abundance of walnut trees in the area. The Chinese owned Bayside Canning Company became the third-largest canning company in the United States after Del Monte and Libby.
