Our own copy -- much used and now dog-eared -- changed the way we travel throughout the Greek classical world. Scullys thesis -- that temple placement reflects the attributes of each god -- opened new ways for our analyzing the architecture we love so much. We do not leave home for the Mediterranean world without photocopied pages from Scully; and we love sitting at each site sharing what he saw. Throw in some Homer; and you have the perfect outline for a memorable vacation. I am so glad this wonderful resource is not out of print but has even enjoyed new editions0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Brillant classic; unparalled scholarship and gripping originalityBy DespammerBrilliant insightful book. Some parts may require the reader to have a bit of prior knowledge of Ancient Greece and architecture. As a former student of Scully (the most spellbinding teacher I have ever had); I find that it does not always capture the infectious enthusiasm of his lectures; but it shows well the stunning persuasive depth and range of his scholarship and the breathtaking originality of his thinking.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely essential book for understanding Greek templesBy BfdonnellyThis book explains and illustrates the quick evolution of Greek temples in ancient times; explaining; in particular; how the muscular; almost squat early Doric columns evolved into tall; elegant ones. It has other insights as to siting and so forth. Its focus is on the artistic spirit of the buildings rather than on archaeology.
