Description

This study addresses the relationship between Japanese aesthetics; a field steeped in philosophy and traditional knowledge; and anime; a prominent part of contemporary popular culture. There are three premises: (1) the abstract concepts promoted by Japanese aesthetics find concrete expression at the most disparate levels of everyday life; (2) the abstract and the concrete coalesce in the visual domain; attesting to the visual nature of Japanese culture at large; and (3) anime can help us appreciate many aspects of Japanrsquo;s aesthetic legacy; in terms of both its theoretical propositions and its visual; even tangible; aspects.

Comme cest; comme caBy Margaret C.The selections are wonderful; but the "contemporary" nature of some of the pieces doesnt always lend a charming feel. I felt that some of the arrangements of more traditional Carols like Hark the Herald Angels Sing and First Noel were too contrived and altered and simply dont flow. Ms. Tornquist did a nice job of duplicating Handels And the Glory of the Lord; but its a little on the long side for just a piano version. My favorites are And He Shall Feed His Flock; which DOES work very well for piano. Also; the beautifully modulated In the Bleak Midwinter is lovely and lyrical. Ms. Tornquist did a fun rendition of Joy; Joy; Joy... the German carol. Its very rhythmic and fun to play. Lastly; The Rocking Carol isnt a piece one hears each Christmas. Tornquists adaptation is stellar and challenging in the different variations she uses in the arrangement.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Even when the section is simply done; it is full of freshness. More; please!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Four StarsBy thinktanknice
