A Gift from HeavenBy Jim MorganThis book is so comprehensive and detailed that it must be read slowly and in relatively short sections: one chapter at a time is about as much as one can manage if he wants to keep straight the acronyms and shifting political connections that are spelled out here. Some might consider that a negative (or slightly less than that appealing) assessment but for my purposes I found this book impressive indeed. I particularly appreciated the authors care in documenting the complex institutional politics of the South Street Seaport Museum and Corporation; "no good deed goes unpunished" would have been an appropriate epigram for this chronicle.Having chosen South Street Seaport as the topic for my NYU seminar this autumn without knowing this book was available; I look upon it as a gift from heaven; as they say. It will greatly enrich my students understanding of this complicated story; still unfolding as the commercial development there undergoes a "sea change;" to paraphrase the current developers advertising campaign.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
