SanchezThe Musicians Guide to Brides by Anne RoosI wish Anne Rooss book had been in my library when I graduated from the Yale School of Music. The author gives good practical advice on how to make a viable living as a wedding musician. What I like most about the "Musicians Guide to Brides" is the seriousness of intent Ms. Roos brings to the subject of making a living as a wedding musician. The author takes her subject seriously without taking herself too seriously. Throughout the book; she shares humorous and inspiring anecdotes from her own experience and other wedding professionals she has interviewed. Many of the chapters also have humorous illustrations to enhance the text. The book can be read consecutively from page one or the reader can skip to sections that most interest him/her; using the book as a resource guide. I have done both; and continue to use it as a resource. This book can be useful to the seasoned professional and the neophyte performer who doesnt know where to begin with his/her wedding business. Anne Rooss book has proven to be a valuable resource to me; and I have successfully used many of her business tips. Chapter 3; "Writing a Performance Agreement" was helpful in getting me to update items in my contracts. Chapter 9 has a Sales Call Checklist that I find extremely helpful to keep me focused when talking to potential customers. Chapter 7; "Exhibiting at Bridal Fairs" gives pragmatic information for the musician interested in marketing in this way. How to act once you get the gig; how to deal with difficult clients; how to market oneself; etc. I could go on. There is much great information here. If you have been at it for a while as a professional; you might already know much of this; but I personally find books like this helpful in rejuvenating the musical and professional inspiration. My edition was published in 2008. It would be nice to see an updated version that addresses the advances in internet marketing since that time. I also would consider giving it an updated title that is inclusive of same-sex marriages. Additionally; there are some minor typographical errors that could be corrected. None of this takes away from the value of the book. If you are looking for a book that addresses the important business aspects of making a living as a wedding musician; I highly recommend Anne Rooss "The Musicians Guide to Brides".0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. THE How-To for all who appreciate live music at weddings and want to help it flourishBy Northwest customerFantastically customer-focused reference--and the customers include brides; wedding planners; site managers; celebrants; musicians; and others!! As a wedding musician who is launching my own highly unique business; I sat down to read this guide with pen in hand and a long list of questions. Anne Roos answered every single one. Her book is wonderfully comprehensive; and the one or two off-the-record concerns I had which she didnrsquo;t talk about in this guide were answered promptly in emails. Her ideas are creative; polished; helpful; even amusing; she keeps it real and charming. She writes in a way that honors all points of view while setting the bar high for us musicians seeking to serve brides. She includes checklists; flowcharts; sample contracts; and other handy tools as well. Music schools should offer workshops based on this book. I feel ready to start my business!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
