In this exceptional book; Steven Price has given us a well researched; thought out and scholarly; stunningly illustrated architectural history of Trousdale Estates in Beverly Hills. The book is filled with wonderful new and historical photography. I am particularly fond of the Kindle version for its light box presentation of the photos; they truly come alive and glow. The coffee table format allows the reader to view the pages in an exceptional oversize version. The book gives readers; those well versed in Trousdale history; and those new to it; a comprehensive history of Beverly Hills and the Trousdale Estates growth and development; and profiles of archetypal mid-century houses; and their architects—from the start of the project in the 1950s to present. The closing chapter shows us homes lost to the wrecking ball or redesign beyond recognition. For those of us who fight for preservation; this book’s publication comes not a moment too soon. These homes are the vision that millions carry in their minds eye as the California life; this book shows what they have given us; and what will be lost to us if they are not saved.Stevens writing is much like Steven the man; and Steven the speaker; informative and entertaining; he draws you in to the time and the essence of the story. This is sure to become the first of many classic architectural books from his hand. Do yourself a favor and buy one today!10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding history of one of Southern Californias most desirable addresses - Highly recoommended!By Jeff RobertsTrousdale Estates: Midcentury to Modern in Beverly Hills does an excellent job covering the planning and development of the Trousdale tract of Beverly Hills - one of the most desirable addresses in Southern California when it first opened in the 1950s; a status it has regained in the 21st century. Trousdale was a place where wealthy Angelenos of the 50s and 60s commissioned houses by almost all of L.A.s top architects of the time; and in fact some made their names there. Prices book includes profiles of some 50 Trousdale homes and background on many others; all in all about 10% of the total built. The design of the book is glossy and graphic; a good mix of new and archival photography; architect and owner histories and floor plans; tying together about 50 different looks and stories that make up the history and style of Trousdale from its creation to the present day including a chapter on houses that have been demolished to make way for new ones. This is certain to become the definitive history of Trousdale; documenting a previously inaccessible aspect of a golden L.A. era; while providing a glimpse of its future as well. Highly recommended.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Beverly Hills Luxe!By Leon PascucciStunning survey of this marvelous collection of modern luxury houses. With archival and contemporary photography; the stories of specific houses fascinates. A bit unwieldy to hold it nevertheless gives great pleasure in its text and photos.
