Great for beginners and scrapping some of the rust offBy Jim HoffmanI am an experienced guitarist in jazz and blues but I wanted some interesting bluegrass to play. When this book arrived I was ready to criticize it for being uselessly basic. For me; yes; I went through the whole book and played everything perfectly in no time; but; for beginners; it is a very good introduction to playing melody and chords and some common bluegrass/country fills. For beginning self taught or lessons this is a great book that rewards with moderate effort. As I played through the book the melodies and fills got progressively more difficult. Except for a couple of brief moments the melodies stay in the open position and the chords are the ones beginners learn right away. The arrangements are good enough to play for your friends or family. If youre just starting out or maybe just plain rusty this could be an encouraging step to more challenging guitar pieces. And its inexpensive too.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good basic guitar lead licksBy eddieThe Carter Family is THE cornerstone of country music. Them and Jimmie Rodgers open the door to country music. These are good basic versions of songs and instrumentals that are very popular with bluegrass acts all over the world. The Carter guitar style( lead in the bass strings) is what most bluegrass lead guitar players start out with. "Wildwood Flower"; is probably the nation anthem to most guitar players; and is in the book. Anyone who wants to learn either Carter Family guitar style or wants to learn a bunch of parking lot pickers classics; this is the book....2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. confident pieces to get you started.By MelvynwalkerI was instructed guitar wise by a work mate -a professional musician in the 60s and learnt a little. After illness in the late 70s I had classical guitar instruction and fingerstyle guitar. I reached about 5th grade; a bout of family bereavements made me alter course; and I took to the piano for a spell. More recently I figured I did not want to waste the gained knowledge of the guitar; and so I completed an alfreds course; got interested in cuban music and finger picking/flatpicking Bluegrass. With a stock of learning material this time around - this(bluegrassguitar classics(carterstyle)) is a journey into actual easier actual songs. Mr Kaufmans instruction is also excellent. Already a johnny cash fan; also earl scruggs; doc watson; - (could not get a note; but I can now). Since the passing of these treasures - the music must continue...oh! big bill broonzy hes good. It is essential to be able to see content as some music is too easy. truly mr m walker
