Sixteen discussions on Ibsens plays and moreBy Israel DrazinThis analytical anthology contains sixteen excellent discussions on the plays by Henrik Ibsen by scholars; as well as a detailed chronology of his life and information about each of his plays; when they were written and when they were performed.Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906) is considered an important playwright and the ldquo;father of realism.rdquo; His parents went bankrupt when he was eight years old. He stopped school at age fifteen and worked in an apothecary for six years. These events affected his later plays that focus on social issues such as incest; venereal disease; poverty; and conflicts with town leaders. He wrote his first play at age twenty-one.Critic Janet Garton; for example; saw the significant of the role of womens role in his plays: "In Ibsens plays; as in the society of his day; a womans chances of self-realization are largely dependent on the attitude of the men nearest to them; and it is the reaction of the men which is the key factor in deciding the outcome." Since this perversion of the female is often true today; his plays are relevant and prompt many people to read; see; and enjoy them.
