Description

As World War II raged overseas; Harlem witnessed a battle of its own. Brimming with creative and political energy; Harlems diverse array of artists and activists launched a bold cultural offensive aimed at winning democracy for all Americans; regardless of race or gender. In Harlem Nocturne; esteemed scholar Farah Jasmine Griffin tells the stories of three black female artists whose creative and political efforts fueled this movement for change: novelist Ann Petry; a major new literary voice; choreographer and dancer Pearl Primus; a pioneer in her field; and composer and pianist Mary Lou Williams; a prominent figure in the emergence of Be-Bop. As Griffin shows; these women made enormous strides for social justice during the war; laying the groundwork for the Civil Rights Movement before the Cold War temporarily froze their democratic dreams.A rich account of three distinguished artists and the city that inspired them; Harlem Nocturne captures a period of unprecedented vitality and progress for African Americans and women in the United States.

The hand positioning chart is really helpful for someone like me who has never had a lesson and needs to understand proper form; rather than just banging around on the keys.Within a few tries; I was able to get the basic melody. I only wish there were more songs and by the time I get the hang of these; Ill be sick of Christmas music for the next 11 months.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Helps with the Alfreds piano courseBy Brent ButlerThese books fit into the Alfreds courses; providing extra material at various levels of skill as you progress in the course. They are not always arranged in a key that sounds the same as the song you are used to; as they are often transposed into "easier" keys; but they give you the sense of the turn; and a chance to hone your skills with a better variety of music than is included in just the course books.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not quite beginner levelBy Donna AkersBought this for my 13 yr old daughter whohas been taking lessons for about 6 months. This was a bit difficult for her; but we think as she progresses; she will be able to get more use or of the book.
