The Renaissance: Studies in Art and Poetry

ePub The Renaissance: Studies in Art and Poetry by Walter Pater in Arts-Photography

Description

Walter Pater (1839-1894) attained a B.A. degree in Classics from Queens College; Oxford; followed soon after by a M.A. degree from Brasenose College; Oxford; where he was made a Fellow in 1865. That same year Pater toured Italy; where he discovered what would become a lifelong passion for masters of the Italian Renaissance like Leonardo da Vinci; Sandro Botticelli; Michelangelo; among many others. In 1877 he published "The Renaissance: Studies in Art and Poetry"; which examines the French; Italian and German writers; painters and sculptors of the thirteenth to eighteen century. It is a collection of beautifully written essays on various artistic movements of the Renaissance; and concludes with Paters urgent call to readers to experience life as fully as possible. For Pater; Victorian sensibilities suppressed true enjoyment in life. His "art for arts sake" philosophy found in this work became the manifesto of the Aesthetic Movement.

Eminently Readable Delightful Journey in Modern ChoreographyBy YSBJoyce Morgenroths work; aptly titled Speaking of Dance; allows us the pleasure of actually hearing the voices of the choreographers and; in a very real sense; seeing their work. This simple integrity of purpose may be a large part of what makes the book so eminently readable. The author signals us with her first introductory words; "Watching dance..." that we are in for a journey from audience point-of-view. Then; Morgenroth neatly take us to the source; her interviews with twelve well-known choreographers. What different sources they turn out to be!Speaking of Dance lets the choreographers tell their stories with the full flair of their personalities. I get who they are without being spoon-fed. They speak in their twelve highly individuals styles; just what you hope for from contemporary titans in the dance world. (No doubt much clearer sounding than some of them actually articulated before Morgenroth edited for us.) In speaking they let us into their world. How much each captivates is illuminated almost as much by how they present themselves; perhaps who they are; as by what they have created on the floor...and; in some cases; off the ceilings; on the walls; with the music coupled with each artists internal vision. In every case I learn0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. great bookBy Deborah SpearsNeeded to get a paper done and renting books on is a great idea when you dont want to purchase the book0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. My students love this book!By CustomerI use this book as a text for my undergraduate Dance Composition II course. Students love reading the direct words of the choreographers and exploring the choreographers processes and philosophies to develop their own work.
