The Science of Harmonics in Classical Greece

audiobook The Science of Harmonics in Classical Greece by Andrew Barker in Arts-Photography

Description

The ancient science of harmonics investigates the arrangements of pitched sounds which form the basis of musical melody; and the principles which govern them. It was the most important branch of Greek musical theory; studied by philosophers; mathematicians and astronomers as well as by musical specialists. This 2007 book examines its development during the period when its central ideas and rival schools of thought were established; laying the foundations for the speculations of later antiquity; the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It concentrates particularly on the theorists methods and purposes and the controversies that their various approaches to the subject provoked. It also seeks to locate the discipline within the broader cultural environment of the period; and it investigates; sometimes with surprising results; the ways in which the theorists work draws on and in some cases influences that of philosophers and other intellectuals.

More art than informationBy StillworkingThe book is more a series of well drawn pictures of Manhattan infrastructure than a narrative of how things got built. It is written more for a young reader (youth) than an adult interested in the actual construction of the city.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great book from a great artist.By Victor L. HernandezDonald Mackay is perhaps one of this eras most talented illustrators. His illustrations about the building of Manhattan catch all the details including the anxiety to see construction workers walking in beams high atop the sky.I truly recommend this book.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great nonfiction bookBy MaryI bought this book for my high school. It is very well done and the illustrations are outstanding. It is very appealing to students. The only drawback is it was published before 9/11. So it is a little odd to read all about the building of the world trade center with no mention of its destruction.
