Drawing from his highly praised French work; Une simple flute; distinguished flutist and teacher Michel Debost has compiled a useful and imaginative introduction to playing the flute. This alphabetically arranged compendium of advice and insight covers essential topics such as breathing; articulation; and tone; but also explores "jawboning;" "finger phrasing;" "the little devils;" and other quirky and vexing aspects of flute playing. Full of practical advice on technique and axioms that lend moral support during tough practice sessions; The Simple Flute will be a welcome addition to any serious or novice flutists library. In addition; the book includes original exercises such as "Debosts Scale Game;" making it an excellent resource for flute teachers. Debost concludes each essay with "In a nutshell" and "Please refer to" boxes that make the book easy to browse; dog-ear; and return to again and again. Offering concise; common-sense solutions for flutists of all levels; this book is an ideal reference guide on flute performance.

Dore: true Crusader among simple knights!By Debora GauAs a student of the Crusade period; I would be hard-pressed to find illustrations that better represent the time in history; either in literature; art; legend; or historical tales! Dore brings us directly back to a time we long to touch in our fantasies; and gives us an appreciation of what it was like to ride with the Crusaders "back in the day". There are precious few really good artists who truly help us to reach back like Dore. Oh; perhaps Leighton; Waterhouse; and a number of the pre-Raphaelite painters; perhaps Pyle; Wyeth; and a few other illustrators. And of course novelists such as Stevenson; Lamb; Doyle; Pyle once more; Scott; and Haggard; to name just a few--can transport us through their words back to the days when hearts and swords met on the field of battle. But there is something about Dore who truly captures the feel and atmosphere of the time. This book is given 5 stars only because it is not possible to give it 6; a true gem among jewels!2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful works of art to describe history.By anonymousThis is one of the best books I have ever bought. And; I must have bought 4 or 5 at least. I give them away for gifts to students. I love Dores Illustrations because they make history so easy to explain when one is teaching. This is the heritage of the true Catholic Faith. We had to fight to save the Faith. Up until 1964 the Catholic Faith was heroic. It was truth. It is the love of God and His truth as it will always be; and the gates of hell shall not stand against it.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. very nicely executed art done by a great artist of his day.By A WriterLove the illustrations.
