HarrisThis book is an extremely useful tool for actors at any stage of their careers. It is especially beneficial for young actors finishing up college or taking those first steps into their professional lives as performers. The two authors; Menninger; the educator; and Hammel; the professional actor; give valuable advice and share stories from two different points of view. This practical guide provides true "tales from the front".-- These people have lived it; and they know what it takes to maintain a positive attitude in a field full of uncertainty. The exercises encourage self-awareness and soul searching and are not always easy. But they can help you to define your motivation to keep you going when the "going gets tough". Creating a game plan; having the right mind-set; building your team; and focusing on your actions are all useful concepts that are discussed within the book. In addition to their own words; the authors also include many thought-provoking quotes and words of wisdom from other actors; playwrights; and directors. MINDING THE EDGE will inspire both the experienced actor and the newcomer to show business to be proactive; control what you can control; and avoid the pitfalls of negativity and feelings of powerlessness. I highly recommend this how-to guide for anyone wishing to create a fulfilling career as an actor.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An Excellent ReadBy Film ActorThis book is highly original and unique; a one of a kind manual. Not only does it describe how to survive as an actor; but how to thrive and ultimately find happiness in a highly challenging field. The advice offered is enlightening and incredibly logical. The in-depth exercises provide a seamless atmosphere in which it is impossible to escape oneself; thus expose the true nature of "You the Actor" (the good; the bad; the ugly; and the effective). The dispatches from the field help rid the actor of his own perceived insanity; isolation and frustration that; at times; can accompany the path to success. I dont think they could have written a more timely or appropriate book for any actor of any age who is on the never ending quest to find meaning both in Art; and in Life.
