Seamlessly blending the personal and the political; Grounded tells the story of a hot-rod F16 fighter pilot whose unexpected pregnancy ends her career in the sky. Repurposed to flying remote-controlled drones in the Middle East from an air-conditioned trailer near Vegas; the Pilot struggles through surreal twelve-hour shifts far from the battlefield; hunting terrorists by day and being a wife and mother by night. A tour de force play for one actress; Grounded flies from the heights of lyricism to the shallows of workaday existence; targeting our assumptions about war; family; and the power of storytelling.Grounded won the 2012 Smith Prize; a 2013 Scotsman Fringe First Award; Best Production of 2013 Award from the Off-West End Theatre Awards; was named a London Top Ten Play in both the Evening Standard and The Guardian; 2016 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Solo Show and the 2015 Teatro Netto Festival Grand Prize.

This book is not just a dictionary of terms; but there are informative essays on various topics (I especially like the one entitled Practicing 101); great appendices (including charts on IPA; vowels; and anatomy); and a huge bibliography to help people find the best resources. Ive only had it for a few weeks; but already find myself referring to it regularly. Its wonderful to have so much important and useful information in one place. I think this book will be a terrific resource for my students. Ive already begun recommending it to them; as well as to my colleagues.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent reference book for the undergraduate vocal studioBy vocalis accompaniusExcellent reference book for my vocal studio (undergraduate voice majors at a small liberal arts university). I spent two weeks just reading through it myself! Book covers a wide swath of information about singing of all genres. Includes a few performers and composers. A few odd omissions -- Hal Prince is in? Stephen Sondheim is not? -- but otherwise good. Definitions are fairly bare-bones but clear and concise. Outstanding appendices on numerous important topics: how to practice; Contemporary Commercial Music; medications and their effects; etc. Have recommended to all of my singers as a must-have for their libraries.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Resource for Singers and TeachersBy Kenneth W. BozemanMatthew Hoch has provided an excellent resource for singers and teachers with this multi-faceted volume. In one tome; he has gathered--besides a handy dictionary of voice related terms--many corollary items; including IPA charts; anatomy diagrams; vocal Fach charts; and lists of interest (such as award winners; standard repertoire operas; song cycles; etc.). This would be an excellent required text for entering voice majors. Thank you Matthew for this contribution!
