( This palette could be adjusted slightly to reflect painting this side of the Atlantic by the addition of ultramarine blue and perhaps transparent oxide of red.) I first discovered this wonderful book in the public library at Rockport; Massachusetts and then immediately ordered my own copy. What struck me at the first read; beside the impressive images of Smarts paintings; was his insistence in drawing the sea currents by the shore in black and white on tan paper to understand the subtle movements of the water around rocky outcroppings. Then; as the concept for the painting is developed; this information becomes useful in supporting the center of interest. In conclusion; I think this is a wonderful and highly readable book that belongs on the bookshelf of every painter of the sea.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Easily understood and easy to apply the instructionBy Jana VolkmerThis is very useful tool; for the suggested limited palette and to the point instruction. I would highly recommend this book to all levels of painters.
