ebooks This Is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession by Daniel J. Levitin in Arts-Photography

Description

In this groundbreaking union of art and science; rocker-turned-neuroscientist Daniel J. Levitin explores the connection between musicmdash;its performance; its composition; how we listen to it; why we enjoy itmdash;and the human brain. Taking on prominent thinkers who argue that music is nothing more than an evolutionary accident; Levitin poses that music is fundamental to our species; perhaps even more so than language. Drawing on the latest research and on musical examples ranging from Mozart to Duke Ellington to Van Halen; he reveals:bull; How composers produce some of the most pleasurable effects of listening to music by exploiting the way our brains make sense of the worldbull; Why we are so emotionally attached to the music we listened to as teenagers; whether it was Fleetwood Mac; U2; or Dr. Drebull; That practice; rather than talent; is the driving force behind musical expertisebull; How those insidious little jingles (called earworms) get stuck in our headA Los Angeles Times Book Award finalist; This Is Your Brain on Music will attract readers of Oliver Sacks and David Byrne; as it is an unprecedented; eye-opening investigation into an obsession at the heart of human nature.

In June 2013 I attended a workshop in Seattle WA titled Line to Color; where he patiently tutored us on the basics of the art. I have been to Japan and was excited to see this book of his drawings. Now; I see that he is a great draftsman also. I have scrolled through the Kindle and read here and there. I approve of the hand lettered font. It is much more personal and also easy to read. Precise and honest depiction of a visually stimulating environment. I will most likely buy a hard copy.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Japan via SketchbookBy K. Wonderful sketches!By Arcata RedSketches from Japan by Frank Ching is a wonderful book of the time he spent in Japan teaching and walking and sketching. The sketches transport you and you experience the many by-ways that he walked and examined. Ching has an incredible talent and you gain from sensing his observations. I highly recommend the book to drawers; travelers; and those who appreciate fine art.
