Demystified but still complicatedBy Gene BagdonasThis is a well-written and well-illustrated book that exposes the secrets of copper plate photogravure. This is a traditional process; pretty much as used by practitioners in the late nineteenth century. Copper plate photogravure is toxic; and is a time intensive process filled with dangers of failure every step of the way. Which is why photopolymer photogravure has been ascendant because of its low toxicity and relatively uncomplicated processes. The authors provide step-by-step checklists for what to do for every part of the process. Also included are detailed appendices covering safety considerations; making the dot screen; a discussion on choice of printing inks; and suppliers of materials. If you have had any experience with other photo-mechanical printing; and you have the facilities; you can probably dive right in; but a workshop would really be recommended to fully understand this process.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy John BExcellent book.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Very technical and complexBy JamesThis book is very detailed; technical and complex. If youre seriously considering exploring the photogravure technique on copper; this book is a must. It tells you everything you will ever need and all the complicated steps in the process. However; there are few historical or contemporary photogravure reproductions which is why this book gets only a four star rating from this reviewer. If you are seriously considering the photogravure process as one you would like to explore; I recommend starting with solar plates rather than copper. It is much less complicated and toxic. A very good resource is "Printmaking in the Sun" (2001) by Dan Welden; inventor of this method.
