Visible Empire: Botanical Expeditions and Visual Culture in the Hispanic Enlightenment

PDF Visible Empire: Botanical Expeditions and Visual Culture in the Hispanic Enlightenment by Daniela Bleichmar in Arts-Photography

Description

In the Louvre museum hangs a portrait that is considered the iconic image of Reneacute; Descartes; the great seventeenth-century French philosopher. And the painter of the work? The Dutch master Frans Hals--or so it was long believed; until the work was downgraded to a copy of an original. But where is the authentic version; and who painted it? Is the man in the painting--and in its original--really Descartes? A unique combination of philosophy; biography; and art history; The Philosopher; the Priest; and the Painter investigates the remarkable individuals and circumstances behind a small portrait. Through this image--and the intersecting lives of a brilliant philosopher; a Catholic priest; and a gifted painter--Steven Nadler opens a fascinating portal into Descartess life and times; skillfully presenting an accessible introduction to Descartess philosophical and scientific ideas; and an illuminating tour of the volatile political and religious environment of the Dutch Golden Age. As Nadler shows; Descartess innovative ideas about the world; about human nature and knowledge; and about philosophy itself; stirred great controversy. Philosophical and theological critics vigorously opposed his views; and civil and ecclesiastic authorities condemned his writings. Nevertheless; Descartess thought came to dominate the philosophical world of the period; and can rightly be called the philosophy of the seventeenth century. Shedding light on a well-known image; The Philosopher; the Priest; and the Painter offers an engaging exploration of a celebrated philosophers world and work.

Terrific book of trad jazz!By Chris AdamsThis is a terrific book of traditional jazz compiled and put together by a knowledgeable and skilled musician. Melodies are accurate; and also many of them include the verse;not just the chorus. The chords are the good basic changes for the tunes. Of course there are variations! For a fun study of the history of these tunes and this wonderful; ageless music; you should also get the book also by Robert Rawlins "Tunes of the Twenties". It discusses the background and provides interesting facts and anecdotes of each song in the fakebook; and also has many; many pictures of the original sheet music. Highly recommended.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Decent book; pages out of order.By HCPhillyThe book is a decent resource; it has the verses and lyrics to a lot of the songs. The changes are OK. The layout and look are OK; not as good as books that were done with Finale or Sibelius. [It looks like a program was used for the notation but not the chord changes. The pages are out of order; [book was collated incorrectly]; so that it goes from page 132 to page 160. Not sure if I should take it apart and try to fix it myself or send it back. Im thinking that they arent all like that. It would have been nice if the collating had been checked out where it was printed.15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic. Great Selection. Wonderful presentation. and a low price.By EVIts about time we had a Dixieland Real Book. Robert Rawlins and the Hal Leonard Corporation are on to something GREAT.The first readily available commercial collection of traditional Jazz that can be found on . (IMO)Music collections like this are normally rare and hard to find. Traditional Jazz societies; underground Jazz Band Books; or just transcribing what you heard was the easiest way to learn songs. And sometimes what you found was illegible; illegal; flawed and incomplete.Along comes "THE REAL DIXIELAND BOOK."Finally! A legal; commercial source for early Jazz Music. But how does it stack up? Lets take a look:STATS:Format: softcoverWidth: 8.5"Length: 11.0"380 pages~250 songs-Presented in the same binding and material as the other Hal Leonard Real Books.-Easily readable; organized; clean and uncluttered.-Page numbers; index; tempo suggestions; composer names; and rehearsal letters are all here.-Most of the lyrics and verses to the songs are included and the keys are true to how they are commonly performed.-Its only $20!!!! (at least for right now).A great selection of Traditional Jazz songs (see list at bottom). I was happy to see songs as complex as "Shreveport Stomp" and "The Pearls" included. This book covers a wide range of dixieland styles (Chicago; S.F West Coast; East Coast; etc. Fats Waller; W.C. Handy; J. Oliver; Armstrong.) and difficulty levels.CONS:-Right now there is only a "C instruments" book; so Eb; Bb; and bass clef reliant musicians will have to wait.-Every now and then I find some chord mistakes; usually at the end of a song (something to clean up in future editions).Verdict:If you play this kind of music (OKOM); GRAB IT. RIGHT NOW.Despite the occasional chord error; this book is a treasure; and for the price of only $20; I consider it a real steal.I hope there are more volumes in the Real Dixieland Books future.****************************************************Song List: Ace In The Hole After I Say Im Sorry After Youve Gone Aint Misbehavin Aint She Sweet Alabama Jubilee Alabamy Bound The Alcoholic Blues Alexanders Ragtime Band Alice Blue Gown All By Myself Angry As Long As I Live At A Georgia Camp Meeting At Sundown Aunt Hagars Blues Avalon Baby Face Baby; Wont You Please Come Home Back In Your Own Backyard Ballin The Jack Basin Street Blues Beale Street Blues Bei Mir Bist Du Schon (Means That Youre Grand) Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea Bill Bailey; Wont You Please Come Home The Birth Of The Blues (What Did I Do To Be So) Black And Blue Black Bottom Stomp Blue And Broken Hearted The Blue Room Blue Skies Blue Turning Grey Over You Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gave To Me Bluin The Blues Borneo Breezin Along With The Breeze Bugle Call Rag By And By Bye Bye Blues Cake Walking Babies From Home California; Here I Come Canal Street Blues Careless Love Chicago Breakdown (Stratford Hunch) Chicago (That Toddlin Town) Chimes Blues China Boy Chinatown; My Chinatown Clarinet Marmalade Come Back Sweet Papa Copenhagen Cornet Chop Suey A Cottage For Sale Crazy Rhythm The Curse Of An Aching Heart Dangerous Blues Dardanella The Darktown Strutters Ball Dear Old Southland Deed I Do Dig-A-Dig-A-Doo Dill Pickles Dinah Dippermouth Blues Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans Doctor Jazz Dont Get Around Much Anymore Down By The Riverside Down Home Rag Down In Jungle Town East St. Louis Toodle-oo Everybody Loves My Baby (But My Baby Dont Love Nobody But Me) Exactly Like You Farewell Blues The Fish Man (Le Marchand De Poissons) Five Foot Two; Eyes Of Blue (Has Anybody Seen My Girl?)
