It should be reprinted and be included in every college and universitys program in Musical Theater and used as a reference in Music Theory. Whereas some authors confuse "through-composed" with "through-sung"; Stephen Citron sets the difference succinctly (page 215). Serious playwrights; librettists; and composers for musical theater should have thoroughly digested the content of this book; and Richard Kislans "The Musical"; and Cohen and Rosenhauss "Writing Musical Theater"; and Aaron Franlels "Writing the Broadway Musical". Also Oscar Hammersteins 1949 book "Lyrics" offers some unsurpassed wisdom. Cheers!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Primer on the Creation of a MusicalBy Great ApeIgnore the negative reviews of this book. If you are considering writing your own musical; or even staging one; this book has a great deal of extremely helpful information. Mr. Citron breaks down the components of musicals from the libretto to the musical composition in a clear; concise manner. Along with a plethora of examples from real life; he is quite clear on one point: what he is putting forth are methods that are the mainstay of musical theater; but by no means the only methods. Those who reviewed this book and stated he "knows doesnt understand the art form" are being ridiculous; Mr. Citron graduated from Julliard and taught at the Carnegie Hall Studio. He knows his stuff.14 of 18 people found the following review helpful. MediocreBy Scott E. MillerThere is some good information in this book but its also riddled with factual errors and a real misunderstanding of several important musicals. I dont know why this guy is writing a book about musical theatre; because he really doesnt understand the art form very well and many of the historical details are just wrong...
