Western Islamic Architecture: A Concise Introduction (Dover Architecture)

audiobook Western Islamic Architecture: A Concise Introduction (Dover Architecture) by John D. Hoag in Arts-Photography

Description

Among the glories of world architecture; Islamic mosques and palaces — from Spain to Egypt and other parts of the Middle East — are universally studied and admired. This profusely illustrated introduction to that subject gives a lively account of the style of structures symbolized by domed mosques; mosaic-lined arcades; and filigreed interiors.A brief; scholarly essay; followed by drawings; maps; and photographs of excellent quality; contrasts — among other buildings — the airy internal ornamentation and almost elegant sensuality of Spains Alhambra with the austerity of Egypts Mosque of Ibn Tulun; both of which; in turn; are compared to the monumental Ottoman mosques built in Turkey. One of the most useful reference tools for studying architecture of the Islamic world; this "remarkably lucid survey … will be particularly valuable in high school and college libraries." — Best Sellers.

Blurred text in charts and blacked out figures in diagrams (Kindle edition)By Vanessa MacaraigI want to give the book 5 stars for the content; but I feel the need to warn those who wish to buy the Kindle edition about the quality of the images in the ebook version. The pictures are okay; as they are also black and white in the original; but some illustrations and charts have illegible text and figures; which renders some of the diagrams useless. I am considering returning this ebook to buy one of the used printed books instead. Ms. Talbots book is wonderful and the information she shares is priceless; but I am subtracting 2 stars for the Kindle edition.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The information and tips it provides are invaluable for a hobby dressmaker wishing to make things the old fashioned way with step by step advice and lots of lovely pictures. There are also sections on make do and mend and household linens. A brilliant buy.
