What Art Is

audiobook What Art Is by Arthur C. Danto in Arts-Photography

Description

Started by the National Life and Accident Insurance Company in 1925; WSM became one of the most influential and exceptional radio stations in the history of broadcasting and country music. WSM gave Nashville the moniker ldquo;Music City USArdquo; as well as a rich tradition of music; news; and broad-based entertainment. With the rise of country music broadcasting and recording between the 1920s and lsquo;50s; WSM; Nashville; and country music became inseparable; stemming from WSMrsquo;s launch of the Grand Ole Opry; popular daily shows like Noontime Neighbors; and early morning artist-driven shows such as Hank Williams on Motherrsquo;s Best Flour.Sparked by public outcry following a proposal to pull country music and the Opry from WSM-AM in 2002; Craig Havighurst scoured new and existing sources to document the stationrsquo;s profound effect on the character and self-image of Nashville. Introducing the reader to colorful artists and businessmen from the stationrsquo;s history; including Owen Bradley; Minnie Pearl; Jim Denny; Edwin Craig; and Dinah Shore; the volume invites the reader to reflect on the status of Nashville; radio; and country music in American culture.

Also a great contribution to Minnesota history; as the state and particularly Minneapolis has a tendency to tear down and not save historic buildings and site (I am still mourning the loss of the old Leamington Hotel.) Highly recommend.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. arrived in good time; in good conditionBy mama d.ive grown up in minnesota; and thanks to a teacher; have never stopped loving this place. its lovely to find out the fate of so many things and places that have disappeared in my familys memory. arrived in good time; in good condition.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Well-writtenBy Michael S. VadosThe author introduces the reader to an interesting array of bygone buildings and long-departed places; thus (in a sense) keeping them alive --a worthwhile occupation. The commentary to the photographs is thoughtful; scholarly; and detailed. Was especially pleased to see the old St. Marys Russian Orthodox Church in NE Minneapolis that my immigrant Austrian great-grandparents attended. This book will become a permanent part of my library.
