All I ever dreamed about was working in that industry but no one in my family knew anyone who was employed in broadcasting; my dad owned a grocery store. I had never even been inside a station.College time rolled around and we visited Ithaca College. The lsquo;rushrsquo; I felt when I walked in and saw the students working in these professional looking studios was beyond amazing. Ithaca College became my first; second; third and fourth choice for college.I was accepted and learned everything I needed from the WICB studios for future employment. When I opened the pages of ldquo;Ithaca Radiordquo; for the first time; that lsquo;feelingrsquo; came back to me. The book has 214 pictures (I counted!) in its 127 pages. Itrsquo;s a complete ILLUSTRATED history of the four stations; WHCU; WICB; WVBR and WTKO. Yoursquo;ll read the stories of the founding of each of these stations and see the original studios. Yoursquo;ll see the original ads promoting the stations and see dozens of pictures of people you hear on the radio now as they got their career start in Ithaca.Even if you never visited Ithaca; the pictures in the book of the 50rsquo;s; 60rsquo;s and 70rsquo;s radio studios are worth the lsquo;price of admissionrsquo;; all those turntables; reel to reel tape equipment and cart machines; none of which exists today. Therersquo;s not a lsquo;flat screen monitorrsquo; in the whole book.In short; I expected a lot from this book; but was absolutely blown away by the research and yes; the amazing pictures. Nice job; guys.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Dont touch that dial; youll love "Ithaca Radio;"By Lorraine DiehlIthaca Radio is a wonderful trip back to another time. Peter King Steinhaus and his brother Rick Sommers Steinhaushave celebrated Ithacas rich broadcasting history through stories and photos highlighting four stations; WHCU; WTKOWICB; and WVBR. Keith Olbermann; a Cornell grad and WVBR alum; in his introduction talks about Ithaca as "the biggestsmall radio market in the world." So true. I attended Ithaca College in the late 50s and early 60s and not only was I involvedwith the college station; WICB; but I worked part time at WTKO; a commercial station in town. It was an exciting timeand the Steinhaus brothers have captured it beautifully. Thanks guys for making radio in Ithaca come alive again.Bill Diehl; entertainment correspondent; ABC News Radio; New York0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An eye-popping tributeBy CustomerSo many talented talkers of the radio biz - Greaseman; Bill Diehl; Rick Sklar; Stacey Cahn; and of course; co-author Peter King himself ndash; made a stop in the hallowed halls of one of Ithacarsquo;s great historic radio stations WHCU; WICB; WVBR; and/or WTKO. Now that Irsquo;ve read the book ITHACA RADIO; I feel I have toohellip; (if only!!). A show-stopper photo that ushered me right into the studio? That of Edward R. Murrow broadcasting from WHCU in 1942. ITHACA RADIO; by Peter King Steinhaus and Rick Sommers Steinhaus; is such a delightful collection of story and photos that you can smell the dusty studio air and the familiar day-old coffee brewing down the hall. The photos are so amazingly crisp; yoursquo;ll want to reach for the turntable and cue up a record. Launching this historic trip is a heartfelt intro by Keith Olbermann. It oozes with so much feeling that yoursquo;ll want to keep the book nearby whenever you have a tough day at work just to remind yourself why you first journeyed into this business. This is a great tribute to the broadcasting industry and Irsquo;m happy I found my way to it.
