Alfred PrufrockIf you are looking for a straightforward; no nonsense explanation and description of building envelope systems used in common residential construction today----this book is probably not for you. Probably a good text for architecture students who paid a lot of money to take the class and must spend time on esoteric principles vs. real world practices. I found the layout of the book difficult to read and the content wordy; to say the least. If you like an abundance of graphic styles in lieu of just plain English and easily readable information; then you might like this text. Long on theory and short on applications. No index. Definitely not a field manual. Rain screens???2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Excellent overview spectacularly illustratedBy Randall S. DeutschBuilding Envelopes: An Integrated Approach by Jenny Lovell provides a great compact overview without getting into too much detail on any one element - perfect for students seeking an big picture look at the subject or practitioners looking for fresh ideas on the topic and ways to express them. Overall; the book should appeal to both academics and practitioners interested in something other than a conventional approach to creating building enclosures. The text is divided into three sections: Feedback Loops; Elements of a Holistic Approach and lastly; Strategies; a series of case studies illustrating the points made earlier in the book. The book advocates an approach to building skin design that takes the particularities of the project; including its site and situation; into consideration in lieu of a run of the mill solution. Coverage of impacts on the building envelope due to climate and energy control are particularly strong. While the approach may not be novel to all readers; the way it is described and illustrated could not be made more clear or effective. In fact; the color graphics are consistently excellent and original. The images alone tell a compelling story about envelope design and construction.Building Envelopes is part of a book series which includes another great title; Digital Fabrications: Architectural and Material Techniques by Lisa Iwamoto. Another book you might enjoy (at over 5 times the cost and size) containing a similar series of case studies advocating an integrated approach is Integrated Buildings: The Systems Basis of Architecture by Leonard Bachman. For a contemporary look at the subject Building Envelopes: An Integrated Approach is a great choice.
